Something serious would need to change (attendance/support explosion) for NIU to be in a financial situation to ever make them a real candidate regardless of all these dreamers talking about us bringing the Chicago market to the Big 12 etc. Not to say it still couldn't happen, but it will be a little more difficult if we're guarenteed to lose ALL recruits with "big 5" offers given what they will be able to offer.

Don't forget the big 5 rule changes will likely execute what they intend to do and everyone else can do the same if they're willing and able. For example, if momentum continues for several years and we're ever able to pay our athletes we will. Things could continue to snowball until we get to the point the big 5 would be willing to let us in. It really isn't likely going to be much different than it already is today.

One article pointed out that non-AQ team's playoff $ share would cover the stipend.

Every non-AQ team's share would cover the stipend?

The assumed extra income from the playoff, it would cover/negate the costs of 2-4k per player...

Doesn't this raise huge tax issues for the universities as Non-Profit schools. Unless they regulate the hell out of how everyone is paid and in every sport, I can see this causing huge issues and being a nightmare for the rest of the school in terms of who gets what etc. I can see lawsuits from sports that don't get stipends etc. I can see something happening, but I don't know how it'll all work out, since do you think states like Illinois, and California which are basically broke are going to let their public universities pay athletes with state money? I think tax payers would have the heads of everyone who let it happen.

Aresco is out there right now blabbing that the american conference should be considered "PC#6" and hang with the big boys. Insanity.

Lets kick the crap out of Iowa and Purdue this year.

For once the G5 should stand up and b*tch about all of this, loudly, and not just wait for the P5 jerks to play their hand out uninterrupted.

Having said that, the below article is less crazy and probably more accurate...
