For those hoping for a coaching change at UALR. Under the present regime, it's not going to happen.

I still believe in my heart that Sidney would have done well here if he had stayed awhile. And as far as successful players being good coaches. most coaches have played at some level and many have been good coaches. The reason I believe Sidney and Fish would both be successful is that both worked their tails off to become great players. They weren't necessarily blessed with great talent to begin with but had the mental toughness and determination to become great players. Those type of players can make good coaches.

With that said, I think Derek will coach someday, but at the pro level.
He'll be a hot commodity as an assistant, and in five to ten years will be a successful head coach in the NBA. That's my prediction. The other. We'll win at least 20 games this season, but won't win the tournament. But could win at least one game.04-cheers

I haven't seen much evidence of great players being great coaches. It could be argued that Fish was never a "great" player. Great person, great leader, great team player, a winner, extremely hard worker but I don't think he ever made an all-star team. So maybe he has the intangibles to be a great coach. I would hate for him to come here and "tarnish" his image by not being successful as a coach. If his wife is ready to leave L.A., maybe he could start here as an assistant. Money shouldn't really be an issue. I'd love to see it. I would never come out against Derek coming here immediately as a head coach- I think to much of him- but not sure that would be a great idea looking at folks like Sidney, Clyde the Glide, and Isiah Thomas (who did have prior coaching experience).

For one, I would never consider Derek as a great professional player, or even a great college player by any means. However, I do consider him a very good and extremely intelligent winner on the court. Therefore the old saying that "great players don't normally make good coaches" doesn't necessarily apply to Fish. He has always been a team player, and I'd bet if you asked any coach he's ever played for, that he probably had the most basketball intelligence on the team. I'd just about bet that Fish would be a good coach right off the bat.

I wholeheartedly agree with you on this. The coaching part would be the easiest for him. He'd have to learn the recruiting and logistics of coaching, but good experienced assistants could help him learn that part of the game. But I just don't see him coaching at the college level. I just see him at the pro level. He has all the intangibles to be a great pro coach. He is obviously a leader and can communicate with players at that level. But if he would return as coach at UALR, nobody would be happier than I would. It would be great for Annette to have him here for the next 25 year or so.

That would be my guess, and for the reasons you mentioned.
