You have sold 20,000 seats, with I think ~14,000 being season tickets IIRC and apparently have a waiting list of ~4500 (which MIGHT equate to 10,000 more seats). Very nice numbers, no doubt.

We've sold out every home game for four years.
Our stadium over that time has held 20000 more or less.
Put those things together and we have had 20000 people attend our FCS level home games, every single one of them.
We have a waiting list that equates to about 13000 more seats.
Put those things together and we could have sold out a 33000 stadium at the FCS level.

Not many FBS teams outside of the P5 can do that, we could do it as an FCS startup.

That's not the making of a team but those are damn fine numbers, not as you say overblown or overhyped.

Charlotte will have a great team with a full 4-5 years of FBS recruitment and one suspects a bigger stadium by that time, but ODU is the most successful FCS startup ever, we (and UTSA) are a few more years down the line, but no-one doubts that all three teams will be excellent additions.

That number is pure speculation and my original point was the money (ie; $$$) our "season ticket/FSL" holders have invested would equate to well above 20,000 "regular" season ticket packages.

Your point is invalid. You merely quote the cost of a season ticket at ODU (completely ignoring the cost of a donation to the Athletic Foundation which is essentially required to get a seat) and then compare it to numbers from Charlotte which uses a completely different system for allocation.

One of Charlotte's big advantages is the corporate backing that you have, if you want to see who has the best finances, let's wait for both of our stadia to expand, then compare total athletic takings, including sponsorship, boxes and suites, donations and ticket sales.

We do very well for ourselves and I think we have the fan base and the football team to be one of the best in C-USA in coming years.

I have to say though, this thread has really opened my eyes to the quality of UTSA, it looks to be a really promising program with a great many advantages.

Wrong, it is not invalid. We also have the same "system" as ODU. The more you donate, the better your club ranking and benefits are (ie; seat locations, etc.). The point is we have the same "club systems", but we have the FSL charges ON TOP OF ALL THAT. I was not really knocking ODU at all. I like ODU and think you guys have done great with football so far. I just think many of your fans seem to think what you've done over the last 3-4 years equates to being Alabama and it means you will always be successful (ie; seems like y'all got the "big head" real quick). 01-ncaabbs

None of us think that we're Alabama, we weren't even the Alabama of the FCS, (that would be ND State) but you tried to prove a point and it was poorly made. Our attendance and waiting list is not overblown and you having FSLs does not make you more financially viable than us, you made a claim and then gave some numbers to try and back it up but it didn't make sense, therefore your point in invalid. If you come back with all of the numbers that both Charlotte and ODU will make from attendance, sponsorship, TV, donations etc. and Charlotte comes out on top, then your point will be valid.

Nobody at ODU is claiming that we will be the best team in C-USA simply because of our 20000 seats, that's not that big a number, (StillJonesing would have something to say about that if we were claiming this as true) just combined with the wait list it shows the appetite for quality football in Hampton Roads, it is one of many positive factors about our program that is a positive sign going forward. UTSA have many of these, so do Charlotte, but most people here clearly believe that ODU and UTSA have a leg up on Charlotte, but as I mentioned earlier in this thread, it will come down to results in the coming years. See you in 2015.

Lets see how ODU does against Idaho this year.

If you are going to count 2012 GaState as an FBS win, then ODU has 1

Both of you played @ GaState in 2012. ODU 53-27 victory, UTSA 38-14 victory... basically the same margin of victory.

That said, UTSA is 2 years ahead of ODU in the transition and 3 years ahead of Charlotte.
UTSA is 1 year ahead of ODU. UTSA was FBS transitional last year, ODU is this year.

Technically UTSA was FBS Independent last year... Conferences now claim the teams in this stage as conference opponents but technically they are not. Same last year for SouthAl, they played a full SunBelt schedule, but their conference record according to the NCAA was 0-0. But when WKU went though it, we scheduled conference teams but were not even counted as a conference game.

ODU is FCS Independent this year. They count as an FCS oppenent to the teams they play in 2013. They will be FBS Independent next year... which is why C-USA had to allow them to be eligible for the conference title in 2014.

The Transition is a 4 year process

Year 1 FCS (Announce Transition)
Year 2 FCS Independent ( Count as an FCS opponent, not eligible for FCS playoffs)
Year 3 FBS Independent (Count as an FBS team, only eligible for Bowl under special circumstances)
Year 4 Full FBS Conference Members

I went with UTSA. If the large crowds can continue and they recruit well/win I see them being a power in the West.

I also think ODU and Charlotte can be good too. I could only pick 1 though.

Just to set the record straight it is 15,200 season tickets

In all, ODU will have 15,200 season tickets, compared to 14,134 last season

ODU raised the prices for season tickets, loge seats and luxury suits. Revenue from tickets and suites will grow by $500,000 next season to $2.5 million.

Fans were also told that if you don't contribute money to the school's athletic department, there's so much demand for tickets that it's possible you won't be able to purchase any. That resulted in a flood of money into ODU's coffers. ODU has SOLD OUT its full allotment of Season Tickets for the 5th straight year! The ODAF collected an additional 1.5 Million in Donations and the University will reap an additional $500,000 per year from increased prices for football tickets and luxury suites, (Luxury suite prices are up by $5,000 apiece, 2012 LS Price $7,500 each Now $ 12,500 each), and the 475 loge seats, located underneath the luxury suites, increased from $875 per seat to $1,250.said Mark Benson, who heads the school's fundraising foundation. In spite of the price increases, Benson said there are waiting lists for luxury suites and loge seats.

ODU also did not advertise on television, radio or newspapers to try to create ticket demand. Instead, it relied largely on email and the postal service to contact anyone who'd ever purchased ODU tickets.

What are you smoking up there in that hill?!?!?!?!? This is not the way I have heard it. How were we FBS Independent if we played in the WAC last year? There is a 2 year transition period.

And the beauty about this thread is that no one can predict the future. So what if you have a 4k waiting list that will "translate" to 10,000 extra tickets? No one outside of this universe knows that.

Ok, so in looking for the source of info, I am even more confused actually.

I thought you were on the same timeframe as TxState, SouthAl and UMass... but I guess you all are 1 year behind TxState in the process????

http://blog.mysanantonio.com/utsa/2012/1...this-year/

Quote:Officials from the Western Athletic Conference and the NCAA have quashed speculation that the UTSA Roadrunners could qualify to play in a bowl game this season.

Both the WAC and the NCAA have said that UTSA’s season will end with a Nov. 24 home game against Texas State.

WAC spokesman Dave Chaffin said the Roadrunners could win a conference title and a trophy “but they can’t play in a bowl.”

Chaffin said Texas State can qualify to play in the postseason this season under a revised eligibility format approved in August, but UTSA cannot.

He said Texas State is eligible, potentially, because it is in its second year of reclassification to FBS status.

UTSA isn’t eligible because it is only in its first year of the two-year process.

If you are a year behind those three, your play in the WAC is that much more confusing. If last year was your 1st year of the two year process then you were FCS still.

Perhaps the other person was correct that you are only 1 year ahead of ODU. I'm completely lost now.

RE: Who will be better? Charlotte, ODU, and UTSA
UTSA and I think the city, dome and Coker/Hickey have almost everything to do with it

The city is obsessed with football and marketing campaigns have really assisting in rallying the city behind the team. Everyone makes fun of the KFC promotion but ideas like that help get unaffiliated patrons in the stadium which will hopefully lead to season ticket purchase. San Antonio is a massive city and with many people relocating to SA (~4.5% growth between 2010 and 2012) UTSA football is a weekly activity for the family. I know several people at work who relocated from up North (many graduates from other schools) who have since purchased season tickets after feeling the pride in SA. The Alamodome was actually an ingenious way to capture fans and bolster recruiting. Believe it or not I actually know people who initially decided to go to a UTSA game because they would be able to drink alcohol. Some of them now go back every week. Texas is hot as hell and the having the games in doors is not only refreshing to the fans but also the players. As cheesy as it sounds, San Antonio is a popular draw for recruits because of the attractions. Sure most players come for football and education but it’s an easy sell when they can live in a city with lots to do (Riverwalk, SeaWorld, Six Flags to name a few)

I think Larry has a considerable edge in recruiting and is currently having to battle as UTSA quickly is expanding their facilities. How many coaches can tell a recruit they coached numerous pro bowlers and hall of famers? Although some recruits may be turned off by his age, I think his coaching pedigree goes a long way.

ODU 0
UTSA 5

Lets see how ODU does against Idaho this year.

If you are going to count 2012 GaState as an FBS win, then ODU has 1

Both of you played @ GaState in 2012. ODU 53-27 victory, UTSA 38-14 victory... basically the same margin of victory.

That said, UTSA is 2 years ahead of ODU in the transition and 3 years ahead of Charlotte.

If you count GaState as an FBS win, count UMass also, ODU has 2 05-mafia

That was 2011, UMASS was still FCS

Quote:You know, I remember South Alabama being pretty smug about their record as well until they faced FBS competition and they went 2-10 last year. The reality is that the only FBS move up to come into a conference and play a conference schedule their first year who was NOT creamed was Marshall and they had 2 future NFL 1st round draft picks on their roster. Will ODU break that streak? Highly unlikely. I dont see ODU coming in and rolling CUSA. UTSA did well in a depleted WAC iut played several FCS schools and one fellow FBS move up in conference. ODU will not have that luxury.

I could've told you that they weren't gonna be very successful because they went 6-4 in their last FCS transition year. They even lost to your team. Their "record" was pretty good considering they never played a ranked FCS team at all. I'm not saying ODU is going to to roll CUSA I'm just saying I don't expect us to suck in CUSA our first year in. We had the #1 FCS offense last year and the #2 offense wasn't really close. Our QB last year broke numerous records including Steve McNair's(you do know him right?) passing yardage with 5,076. Pretty incredible when you consider he was just a Sophomore. If our defense gets better which I think we will cause our new Dline and D-coordinator, I think we'll actually be a pretty damn good team. Roll CUSA? maybe not but I do like our chances.

I've been to San Antonio recently and the problem still, and remains, this:

Ugly, dreary and outdated.

And honestly, I drove through UTSA (nice campus) and was pleasantly surprised when I saw stores in the mall with 9 racks of UTSA gear and 1 rack of UT gear, even though I didn't see many wearing UTSA stuff.

I think UTSA has all the potential in the world, but the no facilities/stadium far from campus/ugly, outdated stadium (at that) is going to hold them y'all back.

I see a complete upside with UTSA. Being a 6'th generation Texan, I simply love a trip to San Antonio (after spending the night before in Austin, of course). 04-cheers

Do yall project an on-campus football stadium in your school's master plan?

Nope. They just signed a new 20 yr lease. People can call it outdated all they want. I will take 72 degrees, cold beer, & the rowdy atmosphere inside the Alamodome on any Saturday.

Unrelated to football, but I wish UTSA would invest in facilities for their other sports soon. Some of the facilities (especially basketball) are downright shameful for a school in CUSA. Worst in the conference.

Being a 5th generation Texan who is most likely at least 40 years your senior, let me share this thought.

It is my strongly held opinion that a green and white "Texas" flag is an abomination and an insult to every red-blooded Texan who ever gazed upon a field of Blue Bonnets while listening to a Mockingbird serenade the countryside. I want to puke every time I see that damn green monstosity, and the Texas state legislature should immediately pass legislation banning its display forever.

Remember the Alamo, and praise the Lord and pass the ammuntition.

Amen.

It's not going anywhere. It was approved a long time ago by the Texas state legislature.

We love it, it flies at every flagpole on campus and during the games.

I'm a Native Texan, see nothing wrong with it. In fact, it's hanging in my main room.
