Nomenclature shift: Big 5, not Power 5
Has anyone else noticed this? All the recent speculation I've read has used the term "Big 5." I guess the Cartel thought "Power 5," while accurate, was kind of tacky.

Just remember that the real Big 5 is in Philly, yo.

I'm still calling it the Power 5. That's what they are, and they make it pretty obvious.

I think Oklahoma, Oklahoma St, Texas Tech and West Virginia would disagree with that. 04-rock

I will give you Oklahoma as they are a power. Texas Tech and West Virginia are along for the ride and happy to be there.

As evidence any conference will take Texas alone and would probably be willing to take Texas even with another school or two. Tech and West Virginia would only be taken by certain conferences alone (and none of them are Power Conferences) and only with another school to a power conference if the other school is the school desired (like Texas).

"Big Five" has bad connotations where I come from. But the comparison may be apt.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Big_Five_(Hawaii)

They had too much power, were too arrogant, and eventually were rendered irrelevant when the people they dominated united to rise up against them.

There's a lesson there.

RE: Nomenclature shift: Big 5, not Power 5
the terms come from media reports of a potential 8 team playoff matchup.

power 5 refers to the 5 conferences who each have a guaranteed bid

the group of 5 refers to the 5 remaining conferences who are guaranteed a single bid

these terms were coined by the schools themselves/media. they are not supposed to show inferiority or superiority, its just the classification of conferences.

There's a lesson there.

"The extent of the power that the Big Five had was considered by some as equivalent to an oligarchy. Attorney General of Hawaii Edmund Pearson Dole, referring to the Big Five, said in 1903, 'There is a government in this Territory which is centralized to an extent unknown in the United States, and probably almost as centralized as it was in France under Louis XIV.'"

NO THAT DOESN'T SOUND FAMILIAR AT ALL

The Big XII has four members ripped away by three separate conferences in a mere 19 years of existence. Fans still think they're bigger, better, and more stable than the ACC. 05-stirthepot

Actually, the more this whole thing unfurls, it is pretty obvious that there is a Big 2 with the B12, P12 and ACC just hanging around. The difference is the P12 and ACC have been proven more stable than the B12 has over the years.

It's called psycho ex-girlfriend syndrome (PEGS). The ACC rejected them, then chose their arch rivals in their place, and - like all psycho ex-girlfriends - they lost their cotton-picking minds.

Don't be fooled. That's what all of this nonsense has always been about.

I will still refer to the SEC, PAC 12, Big 12, Big 10, and ACC as to what they really are: AQ conferences. The AQ was never for the playoff (currently 2 teams, soon to be 4 teams) anyway-it was for the bowls that tagged along with whatever infrastructure that contained the playoff.

AQ is as good a name as anything else. The other labels the media use are clunky.
