RE: ***Huskies in NFL Training Camp Thread***
Julio, Roddy, and Douglas stand out but Marcus Jackson and Martell Moore are separating from the crowd for the last two spots IMO. They both make incredible catches, show an ability the others lack in separating from coverage, and can play slot or outside. Both can be used for WR screens like Julio. I dont care about ST's, you have to play your position and these two do it better than anyone else on the roster. All of the other guys made catches but Davis and Cone showed difficulty separating each allowing an interception, Cone a deflection off his hands. Julio, Roddy, Douglas, Jackson, and Moore is a 1-5 I am most excited about and hoping to see.

Pat Schiller

He may have the flashes, and right now without pads, it is hard for a lot of these guys to show flashes. But he has his form and seemed to have a good understanding on reading the plays coming at him.

Unfortunately I have the sinking feeling he probably could have used another year or two of NFL salary to pay for his offspring.

He's out of work and has a bunch of kids to support. Don't think that he'll be donating anytime soon. Expecting large sums from ex-athletes is foolhardy. A lot of stats out showing that upwards of 80% are in serious financial need within a few years of retiring or leaving the sport. While the sums sound large you need strong fiscal discipline to make it last. It's hard to reduce your lifestyle once the checks stop coming.

May have to wait for an injury in camp or in the first few weeks of the season to get a spot formthe minimum.

I'm surprised. Turner wasn't bad. The blocking wasn't all that great. Jacquizz Rodgers also averaged less than 4 ypc and had way fewer carries, plus Turner was used in short yardage including goal line carries. Snelling averaged 3.5 ypc. Some team is going to get a bargain I think.

I remember one game Turner ran for a lot of yards, most of it was by bouncing it to the outside. He got most of the yards on the perimeter. Kind of odd for a big back like him.

Unfortunately, I just don't think he was athletic enough for the NFL, similar to Landon Cox.

They really don't have problems at all. They drafted 2 rookies in 2nd & 4th round, signed Amendola and still have Edelman.
Unfortunately, once he was let go by the Browns before camp, his shot of making an NFL team dropped considerably. That's a team with WR problems

Just watched Rex Ryan's press conf from Jets camp. Was talking about practice today and specifically mentioned the short RB they had who likes Maurice Jones Drew who absolutely crushed a LB in blitz pickup today (then said it was Chad Spann) and he was all fired up about it. Said it reminded him on when MMJ lit up Merriman a few years back and said it was awesome to see.

Great pub for Spann, thats how you catch coach's attention right there!

Matt Waldman ‏@MattWaldman 12m

RT @MMehtaNYDN: Rex Ryan referred to RB [Chad] Spann as "that MJD guy" after Spann blew up a defender in blitz pickup today.

Randy Lange ‏@rlangejets 1h

11-on-11: RB Chad Spann (5'8", 201) pass blocking for Matt Simms pancakes LB JoJo Dickson (6'1", 245).

Robert ‏@Nacarano 30 Jul

Newly acquired RB Chad Spann looked good at #JetsCamp. He could give Bilal Powell a run or replace Goodson, if he doesn't return. #Jets

Gregory Baxter ‏@Cfd356 6m

Chad Spann odds to be the #Jets starting rb just keep rising.

Not sure how Spann would start over McKnight or Ivory. Making the team first would be great.

Keep an eye on

CB Rashaan Melvin was one of the most coveted undrafted free agents when the Bucs signed him out of Northern Illinois. With Darrelle Revis limited to some individual and defensive drills, there has been no shortage of repetitions available at left cornerback. Melvin has responded to the opportunity and should see a lot of playing time in the preseason. On Monday, he had a few breakups on passes intended for Mike Williams. "He's still a rookie and let's see him when he gets into a game against another colored jersey," Schiano said. "But so far all I can judge him on is what he's done here and I think he's shown some good stuff."

Quote:Bucs cornerback Rashaan Melvin arrived at Northern Illinois as a walk-on, hoping merely to earn a scholarship.

He left there having started 27 games with a school-record 17 pass break-ups as a senior, helping lead the Mid-American Conference champion Huskies to the Orange Bowl.

So, you can see why it was not considered a deal breaker for Melvin when no team selected him in the NFL draft in April. All he’s done is overcome it with a solid training-camp performance that has him in position to make the cut on Tampa Bay’s regular-season roster.

“When it comes to the draft, everybody wants to get drafted, but in reality, everybody doesn’t,” Melvin said. “For me, it was an opportunity to keep working and keep grinding and keeping a chip on my shoulder, showing that drafted or undfrafted, you still have to come out and play ball no matter what.”

The Bucs, honestly, aren’t that surprised. As it turns out, plenty of teams wanted Melvin. The Bucs won the right to sign him as an rookie free agent, outbidding others with a larger signing bonus. Melvin was the Bucs’ top target after the draft, and their efforts appear to have landed them a player.

“He’s got physical tools,” coach Greg Schiano said of the 6-foot-2, 193-pound Melvin. “He works very hard at his preparation mentally. He’s got a good temperament. I think he’s got a chance to be a good player. Now, that’s a lot of pressure on an undrafted player. But every day he goes out there and practices and does a good job, if you keep stacking those on top of each other, he’s got a chance.”

Coaches say Melvin has earned an increasing number of practice reps, and he’s maximized them, showing consistent playmaking. In many cases, those plays are coming against first- and second-teamers, with the cornerback lineup shuffled a bit as Darrelle Revis (knee) sits out full-speed drills.

“It’s a better opportunity for me to showcase my talents,” Melvin said of the chance.

Overlooked initially – again – Melvin continues to prove capable of overcoming.

love these stories...I agree with 7, with his size hard to believe he didn't get picked up in the 7th round...I'm guessing it was based on speed.
