Exclamation Looks like the split is more iminent then we think.
So I am flipping through the channels and stop on CBSCS and watch Tim Brando. Yea I know some don't like him but for the purpose of this conversation it doesn't matter. I missed the whole conversation as to why the caller originally called in but he was from UK and he was pissed about something.

It basically came down being biased toward certain schools and how much of a joke the NCAA is. Wanted to know why they have so much more pull in basketball than football and why they can violate federal law leaking certain information. Brando said that what happened is back in 1984 Georgia and Oklahoma brought an anti-trust lawsuit against the NCAA and won and as a result the NCAA lost a lot of its power in football that now the conference commissioners have more pull than Emmert does.

Then he went on to discuss the article that I think started this phone call. Mark Emmert is now sounding like he is in favor of restructuring Div-I college football because of the annual budgets of the schools within the P5. He said that the P5 are working hard to stay under the umbrella of the NCAA framework in doing so because they do not want to lose the financial windfall of the NCAA MBB Tournament.

Here are some quotes from the interview with the Indianapolis Star.

“There’s a need to recognize there are Division I schools with $5 million athletic budgets and $155 million athletic budgets, and trying to find a model that fits all of them is the enormous challenge right now,” Emmert said.

“There’s no one talking about this being some incremental change,” Emmert said. “I think there’s an interest in some pretty fundamental change in the way decisions are made, both to accomodate those (financial) differences but also to deal with concerns people have about representation ... in the policy debates.”

One structural change being discussed is a subdivision within Division I of the power football conferences. Delany said he can see a situation where schools would compete in the same NCAA championship, such as the Division I men’s basketball tournament, “but provide a different package of benefits (for athletes) based on high resource vs. middle resource.”

Said Emmert: “We don’t know what either of those models would look like. But I certainly think it’s a viable option for conversation.”

Right now the P5 are pissed because they want to pay their athletes and the G5 do not. That is why this gaining traction. As you might have notice the P5 used their media days as their platforms to air this out. The Big XII commissioner said that there should only be about 75 schools in the top division as they are the ones that continually win the championships year in and year out.

It just seems they are really tired of have their ideas voted down by the numerous smaller schools. They do not believe that a smaller school who is tens of millions below in budget and capability deserves to have the same say as they do. In other words Marshall shouldn't be able to have the same pull with their vote as Texas does.

Guys I am afraid that this is going to happen. We say (mostly hope) that it won't but was there not already a split when D-IA and D-IAA was formed? Right now there are is a total of I believe 64 schools in the P5 and if 75 is the magic number than 11 more schools will need to be decided upon to be invited. Boise and BYU are a sure bet so that leaves 9 spots.

So who will those other 9 be and once/if this happens what happens to the schools left out? Is there enough for a new division or will we be forced down two FCS?

Emmert Vows Fundamental Change

This is not just about paying players. Some P5 schools don't want the stipend much less pay players.

This is more about the power of not being able to dictate policies that P5 think are in their best interest because there are a greater number of non-power schools in Division I to include things beyond football.

Pete Thamel did a nice job of addressing this issue yesterday. As he put it there is a group of about 150 schools that would be included not 75 or 84 or whatever this misinformed number that's been floating around. I believe the restructuring will happen only in a behind the curtains kind of way and it's not going to effect how we see things from the outside looking in. Basically, we'll still be in the same division with them, but we may have to relinguish some of our voting rights on certain issues to retain it.

We would likely go down to FCS.

If they are going to make another division, they should implement relegation like in soccer. Every year, the bottom 3 from the top division go down and the top three from FCS go up.

I would be okay with that.

Yes that would be something because that isn't going to happen.

These schools have millions and millions more dollars that mid major schools.

This is about money.

With the split only wanting to be done in football because they don't want to ruin the NCAA Tournament 150 can't be the number because they are saying that 120 some are too many. The P5 do not want to be in the same division as CUSA, MAC, WAC, SB, AAC, and MWC. Although there will be some schools from those conference get brought in.

This number will most likely be decided by some cutoff on the amount of your annual budget.

I don't even think they're going to go that far.

This issue is being perpetuated by piss poor reporting and people like us here espousing conspiracy theory BS and worst case scenarios. From some of my former colleagues in the college biz Thamel's article appears to be the most contextually accurate reporting on the issue since it emerged. Seriously, I encourage you all to read it. It will lower the temp.

We are definitely set to lose some of what little control but we already have so little anyway its not like its going to be a big percentage loss. If the P5 really wanted to make a drastic to split off and form their own independent club they wouldn't have signed a 12-year in the past year that includes the G5.

It's clear the P5 recognize they will need the rest of the schools to support them in their endeavors. It's paramount to minor league baseball....

When I was working for the Mets scouting and player development I had the scouting director tell me that only a handful of the 150+ players they had in their minor league system would ever sniff the big leagues, but those handful needed someone to play with while they were developing.

The LaTech AD is on the Brando show as we speak and he just said that it was happening. Said there is a chance that there will be a championship for the leftover schools. Brando said that the idea is being kicked around and the LaTech AD said he has heard about it.

I'm sorry but almost verybody misses the damn point with this. The P5 aren't "pissed because they want to pay their athletes and the G5 do not." That's just a VERY small piece of the puzzle here. In fact it's more of a red herring.

The P5 are mad that the "financial dregs" of the NCAA division 1 such as MEAC, America East, SWAC, NEC, etc. have just as much say as SEC, B10, P12, etc. when it comes to any meaningful NCAA legislation. The end result will likely be pushing some of these "dregs" out of Division 1 and not a whole lot else.

it's hard to believe that this monster known as college football was, at one time, created in the interest of a "well rounded" education. it is unsurprising that the Godless, soulless TV people (for whom I hope there is spot reserved in the least desirable part of hell) are pushing the split from behind the scenes.

it is surprising that college presidents, who are allegedly intelligent, don't see that they and their institutions are being used as phuckpuppets for sports networks' endless pursuit of higher ratings.

this whole thing has spiraled hopelessly and irretrievably out of control. the only solution is to burn the whole thing down, and start from scratch. and they won't let that happen.

College Sports stopped being about a well rounded education a long time ago.

It's all about making money for the University. The Major conferences are simply making sure that they secure the lion's share of the profits.

Their greed is endless.

They don't want mid majors to sneak into the BCS and steal even a fragment of the winnings.

This.

I think all FBS conferences will be included in any "split." The top tier non-football basketball conferences will be as well.
