Penn State and WVU close to a Home/Home

First Virginia Tech and now Penn State! Despite having several years to think about it, I LOVE LOVE LOVE getting Penn State back on the schedule. Been a long time since I attended a WV/Penn State game.

I like it. But after a nearly 20 year hiatus it won't feel much like a rivalry to the kids playing the games. Nobody playing would remember the last time the 2 schools played...

Penn St has also been scheduling regional rivals. They have just signed a deal with Pitt and had one set up with Rutgers until that turned into a conference game.

RE: Penn State and WVU close to a Home/Home
That game makes perfect sense for both schools and is long overdue. Oliver Luck has made no secret of the fact that West Virginia needs to find OOC games that its fans can travel to and Penn State provides that. Also, now that Paterno is dead, there is nobody standing in the way of those types of games. For that same reason, Pitt and Penn State have announced a four game series that officials from both sides say could turn into a permanent or semi-permanent series. That's good news for everyone, IMHO.

Also, bear in mind that today Penn State announced a ticket bundling price structure for games against Nebraska and Michigan. Fans who want to see either of those games will also have to buy tickets to games against Kent State and Eastern Michigan respectively. That is significant news on two fronts:

1.) One of Penn State's official reasons for ending its nearly century long rivalry with Pitt (PSU leads 48-42-8) was due to outrage from their fans and administration over Pitt's forcing fans wishing to see that game also having tio buy tickets to Pitt/Temple. That was HUGELY controversial at the time so it is interesting to see the shoe on the other foot. That leads me to the other major thing...

2.) It is clear by their actions that despite the claims to the contrary, the NCAA's sanctions have hurt PSU's attendance and to help address that they are going to need more games against local teams who would be willing to buy tickets to games they don't care about to see the game they do care about. West Virginia obviously fits that bill.

This is good news for anyone who cares about college football in the Northeast and it is going to be tremendously fun watching the Penn State fans try to draw a distinction between their bundling plan and Pitt's bundling plan 15 years earlier. I cannot wait to watch either spectacle.

I love it. So happy to have VT and PSU back that I don't even care if we get Pitt back at this point. Pitts football program is in shambles right now and I don't see them recovering in the near future.

As long as it doesn't get in the way of Pitt-PSU then this is great news. Pitt, Syracuse, WVU, and PSU should all be playing each other regularly.

RE: Penn State and WVU close to a Home/Home
my two thoughts....

1. good for wvu, but you should be scheduling syracuse (the team you have played every year since the 50s) or pitt (this was the first year since 1942 that you guys didnt play) if anything.

2. good for psu. you guys said F U to everyone of your rivals with your 2 for 1 BS. now that you have mended fences with maryland, cuse, wvu, & pitt its nice to see that for the first time since the 80s psu has its 4 biggest rivals on the future ooc schedule

Unfortunately, I agree entirely. West Virginia will be a respected university before Pitt gets its program back on track. It's practically hopeless.

RE: Penn State and WVU close to a Home/Home
Looked up the schedules on fbschedules. Timing of this will be very interesting. The Big Ten is starting 9 conference games in 2016. Penn State has Pitt scheduled from 2016 to 2019. They have Syracuse scheduled in 2020 and 2021. Except for one spot in 2015 (with the Big Ten still at 8 conference games), all the open road dates are used up until 2022 right now unless Penn State is willing to go below 7 home games. If this series is announced sometime before 2022, that means the school is willing to go below that and something like Pitt becoming fully annual is more likely. My guess though is that the 7 home games are still a must and we get this in 2022-2023 or 2024-2025 (with a Pitt series in the earlier 2 years).

I wish we could just give Penn State our future series with WVU.

When I was there they were pissing in the stadium cups and throwing it. Seems like a lot more work to get it into a balloon though. You all must be practicing.

I was just kidding. It seems like the fan behavior has greatly improved since '05, not saying its rainbows and butterflies but it has improved. That said we really haven't had anyone we really truly hate in the stadium in years. Apathy kinda set in towards Pitt in those last few years

Oh gimme a break. Maybe if your team could actually beat WVU once a decade we might hate you too and you wouldn't have to feel left out.

I think WVU will end up with all on future OOC schedules. The devil is in the details...
