If that's how you're viewing it, then I owe OldGold an apology. I just didn't want this to become another pissing match.

Penn State and WVU close to a Home/Home
Great series. A shame PSU let the Pitt and WVU rivalries rot so long though

Spoken like a true blue WV fan. All you have to do once you tip the bus is to rip out the seats and burn them. 04-jawdrop 01-wingedeagle 01-wingedeagle 01-wingedeagle 02-13-banana 03-nutkick COGS 05-stirthepot 07-coffee3

RE: Penn State and WVU close to a Home/Home
CHICAGO — Penn State is open to playing West Virginia in football, but athletic director Dave Joyner said the schools have yet to engage in serious talks about renewing the rivalry.

CBSsports.com reported that the former rivals are close to finalizing a home-and-home series that would begin as early as 2020.

“There's nothing to report at this time,” Joyner told the Tribune-Review. “We have a lot of respect for West Virginia and (Mountaineers athletics director) Oliver Luck, and that's a fine program and one we would be open to engaging in future matchups.”

Joyner said he and Luck have had discussions about various sports in regard to future schedules.

Penn State and WVU were rivals when both were independent, playing 59 times from 1904-1992. Their series ended when Penn State joined the Big Ten.

I'm not a "nostalgia" guy for PSU by any means...but I don't think it was such a "Paterno had a chip on his shoulder" type of thing as much as it was A) financial and B) schedule variety.

PSU stopped playing Pitt because our fans filled their stadium and they got all the profit. I know it seems disrespectful from a "fellow Division 1, BCS school" kind of angle...but from pure finances, it didn't make sense.

Plus, PSU--as does everyone--tried to have a bit more variety in its schedule in the last decade. Nebraska 02,03, BC 03,04, Alabama 04, 05 (re-scheduled by 'Bama to 10, 11), Notre Dame 06, 07. WVU, Pitt, UMD, Rutgers didn't fit into that paradigm so much.

That's changed now though. Maybe it's because of filling the stadium due to sanctions...? Could be.

I'm a fan of 2 OOC games vs. big schools and just one cream puff and then the 9-game Big Ten schedule. But I'm only in favor of it if everybody else in the country does it too. (Eh, hem, SEC, cough cough...)

As PSU fan, I love this. Heck, I'd like to see PSU re-assemble its old Indy schedule with 1 OOC game/year - Pitt, WVU, ND, already playing Rutgers, Maryland every year, have a current Temple series, playing Syracuse 8/31/13. Signing up ND for a home & home should be the next focus. Those old games in the 1980's/early 1990's were great. Will never forget frigid Nov game 1987 unranked PSU knocks off #7 ND (w Tim Brown) 21-20 (I can still see a PSU DB knocking a potential TD pass from Brown's hands in the 4Q)!

Meh...they were having trouble well before Sandusky. The 2000, 2001, 2003, and 2004 seasons definitely had their impact. So much so, that when you look at the 2005 season, their gates reclaimed respectability from Ohio State onward (look how many people showed up to see the Purdue game!). When people knew the team was for real, they showed up.

I don't care what beef it creates with other Penn State fans here, but I'm an alumnus who's glad to see Paterno out as coach. Frankly, I think the guy wrote off a lot of the old rival schools after the 1991 Big East bowl-block thing and wanted nothing to do with certain schools unless he could run it down their throats. And I think he lost his spine during the four losing seasons from 2000-2004. He stopped challenging his teams and started loading up with fluff. A MAC school, FCS, Temple...come on. People could smell that crap. Toss in the snoozers with Indiana, Minnesota, and Northwestern, and the fans lost interest.

Penn State could be making more money these days than most, but the fans sniffed the difference. The scarcity of games with the old gang in favor of a lot of fluff and a bowl game in Florida wasn't the same.

PSU should be playing at least two of the old rivals yearly in the non-conference. This is on top of their games with Rutgers, Maryland, and Ohio State. Here's hoping these great series keep going.

Unfortunately, I agree entirely. West Virginia will be a respected university before Pitt gets its program back on track. It's practically hopeless.

Did I see a Pitt guy bustin' Penn State b@lls about attendance. Does 1/2 filled Heinz only for best game count as good attendance. Let's check in 5 yrs Pitt ACC power v stationed-restricted PSU I bet their respective records are identical. But anyway Go Panthers grrrrrrrrr!

RE: Penn State and WVU close to a Home/Home
Pitt could use some grief about their attendance, Kevin. Having nothing but bandwagon fans doesn't exactly scream big time athletics. Pitt's highest attended games were either Penn State, WVU, or ND, and that's because of the large block of visiting fans attending...

There have been a few incidents in the past, like there are at every university when a rival visits, usually because somebody got drunk and ignorant. But the eastern media has delighted in blowing the incidents at WVU all out of proportion, in order to perpetuate a long running stereotype about West Virginia that never existed. Almost all southern folk have experienced similar treatment from Yankees...

Rumors are that the PSU/WVU series may be four games instead if two. We'll have to see
