I have a great story about that.
I am an Ohio U alum who was born and raised and currently lives in Pittsburgh. I still proudly wear my undergrad alma mater's gear from time to time and it is amazing to me how many fellow Bobcats I run into around Pittsburgh when I wear some sort of OU apparel (which isn't often).
It's honestly almost every single time. I haven't been back to Athens in years and years but I run into OU people every month or so - it's kinda weird.
A few years ago my wife and I were on vacation in the Bahamas and I was wearing a t-shirt I bought while still in college (which was many moons ago) and sure enough we run into a husband and wife who shouted to me, "O-H!" I never know how to handle that salute as my connection to Ohio is really limited to its namesake university.
To respond I said, "Go Bobcats," or something generic but friendly like that. He said, "No not the Bobcats, I meant Ohio the state....or Ohio State! Go Bucks!"
I told him, "Look dude, I have no issue with Ohio State. Hell I root for you every year when you play Penn State. But I'm an OU guy...a Pitt guy."
At that point his wife said, "Pitt?!" You're a Pitt fan? I said, "You bet your bottom dollar I'm a Pitt fan."
We didn't buy another drink all night long. Turns out they had BIG cash and she was a transplanted Pittsburgh/Pitt alum and they now live in suburban Cincinnati (a town called Indian Hill or something like that). We got along with them so well that we still stay in touch and my wife and I have even stopped in to visit them when we're out that way.
Imagine that; we made good friends simply by virtue of wearing a t-shirt.
Weird.
