God I miss seeing that kid run in person. What a special treat that was.

The one I remember was against UTEP from the Wildcat snap.

That one was just stupid. An all-timer. I am drawing a blank but who was the QB who was downfield and made the last block? Billy Barefield maybe?

Yes

Yes

Finest play I've ever seen in person.

My favorite memory of that play is the sideline EXPLODING when Barefield made that block. He was ridiculously fast.

I think it was McCoy that got the block at about the 5 for D to get in to the end zone.

Now that you say that I think you are right. BB got one a little further up the field and McCoy chipped the last guy. Not sure 20 even needed the last one. He made that sweet cut back towards the middle of the field.

Oh I miss him so.

edit---he did need the last block and BBs was at about the 40. Had to find it and watch it again.

DeAngelo 76 yarder vs. UTEP

RE: Longest drought in returning a kickoff back for a TD
I thought tiger legend bobby mccain would have ended this drought before he graduated, yet the drought still continues. 19 years now. It's the current longest drought in returning a kickoff back for a touchdown. Whoever breaks this drought will make a name for himself. Everyone will remember the guy who ended the drought.

Didn't we have one called back last year?

Joe Craig in the ***************** UCF game.

Yep, it was right after ucf scored two touchdowns quickly to get the lead back in a game where the tigers had outplayed them. Fans were booing the officials about the warford fumble. On the very next kickoff, one of the officials threw a flag for holding even though he threw that flag very early and from the opposite side of the field. I never did figure out who he called holding on especially since there wasn't much contact being made at that point in the play.

We got screwed by refs so bad that year but looks like karma has caught up with UCF this year

Commercial Appeal had article about it today. Will be 19 years on nov 9, 2015.

“It is a goal of ours, to get it done.”

http://www.commercialappeal.com/sports/t...n_22254286

Updated list done by commercial appeal:
1. Memphis: Kevin Cobb, Nov. 9, 1996, vs. Tennessee

2. Miami (Ohio): DeMarrio Jones, Oct. 11, 1997, at Kent State

3. Nevada: Del Bates, Oct. 31, 1998, vs. Boise State

4. Citadel: Scooter Johnson, Nov. 16, 2002, vs. VMI

5. South Carolina: Matthew Thomas, Sept. 7, 2002, at Virginia

6. Robert Morris: Tyjuan Massey, Oct. 4, 2003, vs. Stony Brook

7. Washington State: Sammy Moore, Sept. 13, 2003, at Colorado

8. Marist: Daniel Diaz, Oct. 9, 2004, vs. Saint Peter’s

Also from CA: most freshmen on the team weren't born when kevin cobb made his famous kickoff return againt utk.

RE: Longest drought in returning a kickoff back for a TD
The degree of difficulty in returning a kickoff for a TD has markly increased due to kickoffs going deep or out of the end zone more now than in the past.

I am kind of hoping we only have an opportunity to run back one kickoff.

Very true a really good team doesn't get many chances at returning kickoffs.

I can't say i'm 100% positive this is a fact, but i can't find anyone else.

1. 1996-Memphis
2. 1997-miami(ohio)
3. 1998-nevada

The former #1, Rice, returned a kickoff 97 yards for a touchdown last year and ended their 28 year drought (1984-2012).

Georgia tech had a 14 year drought (1998-2012) that ended last year as well.

I'll keep taking bowl games instead of kickoff returns for TD

Where's Jerry Harris?

RE: Longest drought in returning a kickoff back for a TD
It's a fluke more than anything else. As the CA article estimates, an average FBS program will return a kickoff for a score somewhere around once every two seasons. A particularly bad FBS program could do that much without blinking an eye.

This isn't a reflection of Memphis football or even the special teams units from the past twenty seasons, it's just an incredible statistical anomaly that has parked itself over this particular program.

BGSU has terrible special teams - they are allowing something ridiculous like 38 yds per kick return. Maybe this is the week. Special teams TD or a turnover may be all we need to keep the advantage in a game like this

Keep in mind, I think we had a pretty respectable punt & kickoff return avg last season & I would take that over a return TD every 2-3 yrs. & a otherwise poor avg yards per return.
