You hit the nail on the head. JMU is in college town and not situated in an urban city. Unfortunately, these basketball players don't the typical niche of a JMU student. That is why Alger is here, to fix the diversity problem at JMU.

I don't know what you expect Alger to do but Harrisonburg will never be an "urban friendly" enviornment.

If they were hating on the city of Harrisonburg, I totally understand. It's not for everybody and the students that have to stay in town during the summer are generally pretty bored. My issue was them talking about JMU itself being "overrated" or hyped up. If you are getting a free education from a school and are a school representative on one of there athletic teams, you should keep your mouth shut and fingers away from the keyboard if you are having problems. It makes you, the school and the team look bad.

No, but it was more likely to be about the availability of parking on east campus or the quality of the cheese omelets than the quality of the education, the professor to student ratio, or the number of books in the library. I wish athletes wouldn't post this kind of stuff, but people always make too big a deal of it. I think Devon must have quit JMU a dozen times according to his twitterings.

Hard to not give Devon a pass considering what was going on with his mom for most his career though.

I have an African American coworker whose daughter recently picked George mason over JMU and W&M. diversity and "things to do" were on the top of her list as to why she picked the school she did. Her mom would've preferred she went to a better school, but it's ultimately her daughter's decision.

Joke is on her, especially if she doesn't have a fake ID. I remember my Mason friends being bored to tears as Freshman on campus there.

I would be interesting to know the context. Maybe they just got finished hearing a JMU assistant hype JMU to potential recruits as the greatest school in the world - which is their job, of course. I agree that certain thoughts are better left unpublished, though, regardless of the context.

Don't know why there is so much focus on Harrisonburg, and what there is to do here. There is no mention of Harrisonburg being "hyped" or "average". The comments were made about JMU.

That would make it even more ridiculous. It would be fine to have a laugh about an overzealous recruiter in the privacy of their apartments, but doing it on social media where plenty of recruits, coaches and fans follow them is idiotic. A recruiter of another school could and would use these tweets as an example of why someone shouldn't choose the Dukes.

How can you say JMU is average when it's the only school you've ever attended?

To be fair, the basketball team did finish with an RPI of like 160 or something...that is pretty average for Division 1.

Wouldn't they be admitting that they are average basketball players then?

My thoughts exactly....guess they feel like they fall right in line with the school.

I don't think they were talking about basketball. Really stupid conversation to have in public with potential recruits following you on twitter. Wouldn't you want to spend the rest of your career playing with the best players possible?

Don't get me wrong, more diversity at JMU would be nice but in no way do I expect it to just change with the new president.

RE: your JMU basketball stars ladies and gentlemen
I see them tweeting stuff about being bored all the time, my guess would be that it's about people that hype up JMU as being the best four years of your life, being a place everyone loves, etc. etc. and now they're sitting around bored... Not that big of a deal, but I definitely agree it's stupid to post publicly. Still, remember when you and all your friends were 18 or 19? 18 and 19 year olds say stupid things, not that big of a deal. As far as Devon, I remember a few days ago him retweeting something about wishing you could be a freshman again and he added that JMU was the best years of his life. I screenshotted it and sent it to a friend I'm trying to convince to go to JMU03-lol Maybe those two will feel that way when they're done too.

RE: your JMU basketball stars ladies and gentlemen
As much as I loved it, I too had some boring days. During those days I would imagine students at other schools having the time of their life. All young people do this, the grass is always greener when you are young.

Personally, the best days were the ones where we created things to do, especially those summer days. One thing for sure, if you were there during the summer you needed a car.

And Union... Maybe this stuff is what these two are missing out on. Although I think it's technically illegal to jump off the tower at Union isn't it? So maybe nobody should tell them about that one.

Yea pretty much sucks in the summer time as student athlete. Working out , broke , bored , no girls ...............JMU is great but for some youngsters who don't have a car up it it can be very boring. Can't expect them to love every aspect of it just because its free. But like Herm says ..........don't press send !

Crap, BKMCD's, I was holding out hope that you especially, and perhaps TEKE and a couple others would catch this one, C'mon.

You tell the boss you were sick? You gonna take your problems to the United Nations? Bump, ba,da, bumb, ba daaa. Ain' no cure for the summertime blues.

Someone needs to give them a ride over to the Sunchase pool. I know a lot has changed since I graduated, but coming from someone who stayed at JMU and worked/took classes every summer, the Sunchase pool ALWAYS had a lot of talent.
