I'm sure some of those visitors spend some money in the suburban city of Birmingham.

And every year, I hear two or three radio broadcasts in Memphis originating from SEC media days. They almost always say they are broadcasting fron the Wynfrey Hotel in Birmingham. So Birmingham gets the publicity whether it is correct or not.

It would not upset me at all if they did move, just so I could sneer at the SEC homers here sucking it.

RE: NBR: SEC Media Days leaving?
The Hoover vs. Birmingham thing is dumb in this context. Almost every media outlet outside of the Birmingham-Anniston-Tuscaloosa TV market is referring to the event happening in Birmingham. The people had to use the Birmingham airport to get here. I'm sure some of them are staying in hotels in Birmingham. When they go to the strip club, both of those are in Birmingham.

Doesn't matter since it will be in Atlanta or Charlotte next year anyway. The sooner they get out the better, IMO.

RE: NBR: SEC Media Days leaving?
It is never a positive to lose any major convention (and that is essentially what the SEC Media Days are) to another location when we need to be bringing them in. As we have repeated many times, there are two major sources of tax revenue for a major city. One is the people who live in and/or earn their living in that city. The other is to host great appeal events that attract people to come to a city and spend their money while there for days at a time. That latter concept is the one that escaped too many voters when the MPF and its related projects was being voted down 15 years ago.

When you have a long list of expensive municipal projects, and I have seen them offered many times in the newspaper, but you vote down the chance to bring tax revenue in from other places, who does that leave to pay the freight?

RE: NBR: SEC Media Days leaving?
I may be the only one who thinks it will hurt if it leaves Hoover/Birmingham.
It brings in revenue and tourist to the area and will be a loss of revenue. But on the other side it will be a good kick in the but to local governments to stop trying to appease a conference that doesn't care about them.
When (and I said WHEN) we get an OCS and lesion field is an empty ruin and no one is going to the Hoover Met then it may be too late.

That afternoon when one media person from each city sits in on a conference call will generate a lot of money for Birmingham.

+1...I don't get it, either. The sec doesn't play a down of football, an inning of baseball or a quarter of basketball in the city of Birmingham, but its' leaders keep pandering to them in the most gutless of fashion, I still don't get the $1 a year rent for the headquarters building after they up and left the city high and dry almost 20 years ago, taking its' title games out of here entirely, but they talked tough to the SWAC for doing the same exact thing weeks ago. Truth be told, I have a feeling that Charlotte is going to change all that in the near future, which will suit me just fine, it won't stop some of these spineless, so-called sports journalists around here from following them to the "Queen City" (I think that's Charlotte's nickname) & take the less than dubious "art" of brown-nosing to a record-breaking level... Whatever....Make mine Conference USA!!!

It's because speaking out against wasting money on the SEC is perceived as equivalent to attacking the sacred Tahd, and no politician in this town is going to risk that.

It is what it is.

The $1 per year subsidy for the SEC HQ is comparable to the lack of state property taxes for the few major land holders around Alabama. It keeps the costs of moving elsewhere or developing something locally seem large compared to the costs of remaining "as is".

Lots to see & do (the College Football Hall Of Fame is only going to be a plus for them!)
Top notch facilities (they're getting a new stadium in the near future to replace the Georgia Dome)
Major destination city

I can see this happening...The longer it takes Birmingham to get that dome and/or for UAB to get that OCS....01-swc

SEC media days are big, but I don't thing they need a domed stadium to hold them in...yet.
