During my tenure in the "canoe club" in the early 80s we wore our uniforms to every home game against tamu and invariably the cadets mistook us for officers and saluted like we were royalty. As a lowly freshman (the term plebe is only used for Naval Academy midshipmen) our treatment by the corps was much better than that of our upperclassmen NROTC midshipmen.

Our worst tormentors were not those from tamu but our crosstown students from dUH who had nothing better to do than to prowl the Rice campus in search of underclass mids who weren't wearing their uniform on the required drill day or showing the proper deference to the "superior" dUH upperclassman. Lord of the Flies for those who bought into it.
The one thing Aggies respect is a uniform. Our team will be shown proper deference, but without the MOB, we need some display for the national TV audience. Hopefully, the soon to be announced AD moves fast to get some Rice visibility in the stands. Rice NROTC Mids would do nicely as the white uniforms stand out and draw the cameras attention. An added bonus is that the clueless aggie fans and corps of cadets will show deference and not engage in boorish behavior with these students.

I'm an Ag, class of '89, and was shocked to hear that the MOB is not going to attend the game. I guess I just assumed that when it was revealed that the game was scheduled, the MOB had that date marked on their calendar. Before it came out that they weren't going to be there, I think every Ag (and non-Ag) I talked to about the game laughed and said something along the lines of "I wonder what the MOB is going to make of the Manziel situation? So much material to work with there. You just KNOW they are gonna have something to say about him."

I've read the reasons why they won't be there. I never really considered the notion that logistical or organizational hurdles could not be overcome. If any existed, I would have assumed their motivation to be there and make a statement about the Manziel drama would have been enough to make it happen.

Now as for this stuff about how the MOB might not be safe at the game, I don't believe that. I remember them performing at Kyle Field in the late 80's, and did not witness any problems. Whatever bad blood there was with the MOB is part of the lore of the series, of course, but in 2013, that is water long since under the bridge.

I live in Tennessee now, deep in Volunteer country. So I just see A&M games on TV. But if I was still in Texas, I would definitely be there for the game. I envy you fellas that are going. Hell, we may not know for sure who the QB is gonna be until the first offensive series, when all eyes focus on the sideline to see if you know who trots out onto the field. The drama...

And the MOB will not even be there to add to the suspense? Hard to believe...

Good to know that the modern Aggies have a better sense of humor than the old Aggies. I have an Aggie son-in-law, and an Aggie business partner, and it is hard to imagine them acting badly. Well, the son-in-law for sure. OTOH, though, after the Food Truck incident, I did have a long time customer, a third generation Aggie, call and cancel his orders with me.

An Aggie friend of mine told me how he had to calm down the Corps director when he blew his gasket upon finding out that my friend's daughter -- who was trying to join the Corps -- had sat and played with The MOB for a game while she was still a HS student, and that her sister was a MOBster.

Apparently not all of the water has passed under the bridge.
