Worst Logo Change?
One of the worst logo changes had to be the change from Script Pitt:

** to be correct these aren't the colors from the 1996 season after which the logo was changed to Dinocat (and changing 'Pitt' to 'Pittsburgh'):

Finally, you have the Dinobeagle. Although, the Dinobeagle wasnt the primary logo (that's the current 'Block' Pitt) and only a secondary logo:

Lost Lettermen graded UConn's new look a D.
Quote:How bad are these new lids? They might be the most ridiculous ones we’ve seen since Maryland unveiled its infamous “State Pride” uniforms in its 2011 season opener.

They also have a list of "most iconic" college football unis -- no surprises, they went with old-school designs worn by traditional powers.

Don't like the Dan Marino-era Pitt colors, design and uniform. At all. Terrible.

The last 5+ years have looked good. The Fitzgerald years weren't very good but they gave birth to the quality uniforms Pitt currently has.

Maryland seems to have some bad brand management.

They have an extremely recognizable logo with the turtle but they don't use it. It would be like USC deciding to stop using the Trojan logo.

That's not even a correct version of the script font. That is a someone's attempt to copy it that didn't get it right. The real thing looked like below, and bright canary yellow and royal blue were used during the 80s through 1992 and navy/mustard used in the 70s and between 93 and 96. Pitt's actually colors are old gold and navy, not anything that was actually worn in 1976, 1980s or 1996. This script font was in use from 1973 to early 1997.

This simplified Panther logo was used as a secondary logo for one year and then silently retired for restoring the original torch-cut head. (the reason they tried it is because the detailing on the torch-cut head has so much detail that it is hard to reproduce for manufacturers, especially at small sizes). The prior torch cut Panther head has been in use as a logo every year since 1997 except the one year Jeff Long tried to introduce the simplified design. The current arched block Pitt has been the primary logo since 2005.

The actually primary logos were the script Pitt above in various different colors that were used in various degrees between 1973 and 1997 although it wasn't uniformly applied across sports (some wore block, some wore cursive, some wore what was above) nor was it uniform in design.

The torch-cut arched "Pittsburgh" with Panther head logo was used as the primary logo from 1997-2004. Colors were Vegas Gold and Midnight Blue.
The torch-cut Panther head is still used as a secondary logo sans the "Pittsburgh" wordmark.

And the block arched PITT has been used as the primary logo from 2005 to present. The blue has morphed into a more Navy tone (especially on uniforms), although vegas gold remains (the actual Pitt gold, again, should be old gold).

RE: Worst Logo Change?
Thanks Paco, I knew you would post to provide the most accurate information about the logo!

Can you give a rundown on the places that still show the torch-cut logo?
For some reason I thought the block started in 2005. I actually like it.

The block started in 1909. You are right though, the stylized collegiate arched block with drop shadow that we currently use started in 2005 (I always remember that by the Fiesta Bowl year and I always confuse that because it was the 2004 season, but the logo came around in 2005...although they ditched the torch cut font a few weeks prior to the bowl game and switched to a generic block lettering until the official logo was released).

I don't know what you mean by a rundown of places that still used the torch-cut logo. No one uses anything but the torch-cut Panther head, and it has always been around except that one year with the simplified design that bombed. The torch-cut font/lettering hasn't been used since 2004.

Where is the torch-cut Panther displayed - at any of the athletic facilities, elsewhere?

You mean like molded into every row of seats at Heinz Field?....

I don't know, it is scattered around, but not typically prominent (unlike when it was at center court of the Pete like it was 10 years ago)

almost entirely it is the block Pitt that is the logo displayed at facilities and on playing surfaces...50 yard line at Heinz, mid court at the Pete and above the floor boxes, in front of the Diamond at Cost Field, baselines and scoreboards in Fitzergerald Field House. Again, the Panther is a secondary logo, which means it is not the one they are using to push brand identity. I can't think of any real prominent or physically permanent displays of it at the moment...painted on the top of the baseball and softball field dugouts (along with block Pitt) and some banners in Trees Pool, etc I think. It's around, but not as prominent or permanent. Hell, the script Pitt is still embedded in pavers outside the student union. I can't think of any sort of equivalent but I could just be forgetting. The university seal shows up more to be honest (under the Pete scoreboard, in pavers at the Pete Sports Complex, mounted on the external facade of the Field House, cut into the stone of the cornice of Alumni Hall).

RE: Worst Logo Change?
I realize I might be in the minority here - but I liked the 70's (Marino era) mustard and navy helmets. They were distinctive. By color alone, you knew it was Pitt. I didn't like the move to using the whole town name (now the first question that pops to mind when you hear anything about Pittsburgh football is "which Pittsburgh FB team?") - or block script (too boring and too common). The pictured panther (both versions) is nearly unrecognizable on a helmet because there is too much going on. The best logos can be recognized instantly (because football helmets are generally in motion - except for a few seconds before each snap).

What about a best logo change?
My vote: Wisconsin going from blocked "W" to the bold curved red "W"

Thanks for the info Paco! I was just curious whether the torch cut panther was placed anywhere 'new' or 'removed'. I live overseas and I went to Pittsburgh (and the university) this past summer for the first time in about 10 years and I didn't have the time to check out everything. I can only watch Pitt on TV or on the net.
