Their shakes??

I can honestly say I didn't know Milo's had shakes. Can't believe they didn't mention the tea.

Do that all the time, I wish they'd bottle the stuff as it makes a good hotdog sauce too

RE: Hamburger Chains
Pepsico tried to enter the burger market (augmenting their ethnic circle of Taco Bell, KFC, Pizza Hut and others) with a chain called "HOT N NOW" with an outlet in Eastwood Village across Crestwood Blvd. from Sears. It did not last long. I would have suggested "Hamburger Heaven" to the author as well as Milo's.

RE: Hamburger Chains
Really not impressed with Hamburger Heaven or Whataburger.

I personally would suggest Milo's & Jack's.

Yes, Jack's. I think the hamburgers are good.

That was a case of serious misjudgment on the part of Pepsico. That decision alone is the reason practically all if not all major hamburger chains now serve non-pepsi products (Coke and/or Dr. Pepper).

As for Milo's...bleh...

RE: Hamburger Chains
Oh yeah, McDonald's has always served Coke, but the others typically served Pepsi until the Hot N Now fiasco. Wendy's and Hardee's were particularly outspoken about serving a product of a "competitor".

The news archive below shows Wendy's stance. Note, it mentions Burger King serving Pepsi at the time. Burger King shortly followed Wendy's lead. I should mention that Wendy's started backing off Pepsi when pepsico first started buying restaurants in the 80s, but the Hot N Now acquisition led to the majority of their remaining franchisee holdouts to make the change over.

So does Arbys

Also, in the Latin American and Carribbean countries, Burger King carries Pepsi.

RE: Hamburger Chains
Not sure if it is a national chain or not, but Backyard Burgers is pretty good.

Been several years since I have had one there though, I don't make it over to Vestavia that often.

Backyard Burgers was good about 20 years ago. They are not a national chain, but a regional one. Began in Cleveland, Ms, now headquartered in Nashville.

Several years ago, they sold the company and now it is the most overpriced crap you can buy. Ive never seen a good restaurant go downhill so fast. There are a bunch here in Memphis.

And they serve Pepsi products.

Which is why I don't really care for 5 guys burgers.

I can get a Milo's Hamburger combo for under 6 bucks.

Same deal with Jack's & the Big Jack combo.

RE: Hamburger Chains
I've been to 3 of the top 5. Of the 3, I would rate them:
1. In-N-Out
2. Whataburger
3. Milo's

I tried a good regional chain last weekend that I'd like to see go national: Culver's Frozen Custard. It reminded me of a Dairy Queen, although I think their Concrete Mixer is a little thicker (and better) than Dairy Queen's Blizzard. Wisconsin was covered over with Culver's, about as much as McDonald's and Burger King. About 1/4 of Culver's nearly 500 restaurants are in Wisconsin.

RE: Hamburger Chains
It is interesting that hamburgers are more nationally accepted across regions while BBQ remains largely regional as to specific tastes. Many instances exist over time of very successful BBQ places failing badly when they venture out of their "neighborhood" of origin. Is that why there are no "McDonald's, Wendy's or ___King " in the BBQ business?

Those two, along with Pizza Hut, are still owned by Yum! Brands, which was spun off by Pepsi. I would imagine that there is a perpetual contract in place for soft-drink supplier.

Weirdest thing I've seen with the fountain drinks is at the KFC/A&W restaurant in Haleyville, AL. The root beer they serve there is Mug root beer.

Another item:
When entering Haleyville, you see a sign telling you that it was the nation's FIRST city to begin to use the 9-1-1 emergency phone number.
