Those two, along with Pizza Hut, are still owned by Yum! Brands, which was spun off by Pepsi. I would imagine that there is a perpetual contract in place for soft-drink supplier.

Weirdest thing I've seen with the fountain drinks is at the KFC/A&W restaurant in Haleyville, AL. The root beer they serve there is Mug root beer.

Another item:
When entering Haleyville, you see a sign telling you that it was the nation's FIRST city to begin to use the 9-1-1 emergency phone number.

I suspect it is because the A&W restaurants have moved a long way from their roots of root beer. They were owned by Yums which use Pepsi products, of which Mug is.

Similar to the fact that AT&T has little to do with the telegraph anymore.

Only two good things came out of Haleyville: 911 and Guthrie's.
