Probably more relief we will be gone. It will give them a chance to do something they haven't done in 8 years in CUSA. Win the East. We won a share of it just last year...

Agree. It will be wide open for Marshall trading ECU/UCF for ODU/UNCC. More access to S.FL via FAU/FIU and I'd be excited too if I were a Herd fan.

Lets be honest here SJ. In 2011 Marshall went 4-1 against the east but had the misfortune of having to play both Houston and Tulsa on the road.

And to any ECU poster talking about Skip leaving the cupboard bare, well, Ruff beat 2 top 25 teams with that empty cupboard and hasn't been able to beat a team with a winning record since. Said it before, when Skip left, he took your teams mental toughness and preparation with him. Your just lucky you had the easy cross over schedule last year or you would have been home for the holidays.

I can't believe we are even having this discussion with a .500 CUSA team with a losing overall record that lost to a 3 win UAB team. I don't think there as been a team that has done less that has had this much hype in CUSA. Just shows you how big a hit this conference has taken they even get discussed. The two preseason favoirtes are off to the AAC too.

You forgot they picked him up from Temple where his D was giving up 30+ points.

So I looked it up and it seems like Heater's defense at Temple was ranked 90th overall. For comparison purposes ECU's defense (which totally sucked) was ranked 87th overall and UTEP's defense was ranked 91st overall. In real terms ECU and UTEP fired defensive coordinators that were ranked were Heater's unit was. In fact UTEP fired the whole coaching staff, but Marshall felt confident to pickup a guy that was just as bad as the guys that were fired.

However, I guess that Heater is an improvement for Marshall, because Marshall's former DC's defense was ranked 101st. If anyone cares USF's defense was ranked 65th, which is not bad considering that they were always on the field due to Skippy running the 3 handoffs, 3 yards a carry cloud of dust offense; which was only broken up by the occasional bonehead throw by B.J. Daniels that ended in interceptions.

Look at Temple's 2011 stats. They finished 12th in the country in total defense. 2012 was a rebuilding year. A team like Temple (or Marshall or ECU) doesn't have the luxury of just reloading. Fortunately for us we already have the talent in place so no rebuild is needed. Also, a small fact, 2012 was Temple's first year back in the Big East. Not only were they breaking in new guys, they were at a talent disadvantage coming from the MAC.

I like that you guys have no idea what you are if for. I figure you'll start to catch on 4-5 weeks in to the season.

They were in the MAC in 2011. It is easy to build fluff numbers against Eastern, Western and Central Michigan, Ball State and whoever the Hell else.

In 2012 the guy moves to the Big East and his defense drops 78 places to 90th? That ain't a rebuilding problem, that is a he stinks problem. And how could he go to a BCS conference and therefore have the ability to use the BCS label to recruit and his defense was still pathetic?

PirateMary, always gave you credit for knowing, or understanding, more about football than that. Explain this to me, you think the AAC 2014 version will be better than CuSA 2012 version, correct? And you base that on taking "the best" from CUSA and adding it to the leftover scrubs of the Big East. Temple had to go to the real Big East and play with not just MAC talent, but young MAC talent. They could recruit using the BCS tag? So all those true freshmen were going to keep Louisville, Rutgers, etc from moving the ball?

Keep reaching for straws. You would be well served to just ignore Marshall until the week of our game. No reason to lose sleep over things you can't control.

Well the 2012 version of CUSA was the worst version of CUSA since the 2005 expansion (12th out of 12 FBS leagues), so yeah I am going to go out on a real strong limb and say that the 2014 version of the AAC (which was 5th out of 12 FBS leagues in 2012) is probably going to be stronger. To be honest with you, the fact that CUSA even fell below the Sun Belt was jacked up.

He could have used program ready JUCO's. Other schools do it to fill holes.

Coming from an ECU alum and fan I agree with you about USM being the cream of this conference in football. You're entitled to your opinion, and it is just that, your opinion that we are over ratated. But if we haven't done Sh!t and won two conference championships then that speaks volumes about what you have done.

How did we almost lose that game, what the hell does that mean anyway, you either win or you lose. It is kinda like saying someone is almost pregnant...We controlled the 2nd half of that game...It was a pretty solid win. Also you guys had no clue how bad you sucked at that time and we were breaking in a new QB starting his 1st game. If I recall correctly you played a couple of decent teams tough early in the season.

Also how do you figure Coach Ruff is a "bad" coach? His CUSA record is just as good if not better than Fedora's first 3 years in CUSA...Also he has managed to beat UAB every season...Something that you Eagles seem to have a hard time doing. Coach Ruff has actually done a pretty good job beating the teams we should beat...Bad coaches do not do that, bad coaches lose to inferior teams. What Ruff has not done a good job at is beating the better teams on our schedule...He has a couple of wins against teams we should not have beaten but that was early in his 1st season. That is the next step for Coach Ruff, he needs to make us more competitive against teams that have better talent and resources.

Laughable coming from a Marshall fan...The days of USM being the cream of CUSA have been long gone except for 2011. They have had some good seasons and I am not trying to belittle them as they are a school I actually respect, but honestly no team has been the cream of the conference since it was restructured back in 2005. It has been ECU, Tulsa, Houston, UCF, and USM as the cream of this league. How do you figure we are overrated??? I do not see us being propped up as BCS or top 25 contenders. Just go back and do the research..ECU has been one of the top teams in the new/old CUSA. We have won 2 conference championships and played in 2 conference championship games. Which if my math is correct that is 2 more times than Marshall.

We have consistently finished higher than Marshall in league play. We have been to more bowl games than Marshall since they have joined the league. We have better OOC wins than Marshall has had since coming into the league....If anything, all the predictions of Marshall being so good this season puts you guys as the overrated team....Come to think of it you are the ones who have not done crap in about a decade. Maybe that will change this season for you guys...Maybe "wait til next season" has actually arrived for Marshall...We shall see. I suspect you guys will be pretty good this season but I just do not understand some of the hatred of ECU coming from a few Marshall fans...I thought we usually had a pretty friendly rivalry.

All this smack talk about who is picked to win the league is a freaking joke...It does not mean a damn thing. We actually get to play the season out on the field and find out who in fact is the best team...So some people just need to calm down the hell down.

Don't get mad at ECU because the Coaches/SIDs in the league picked us to win the East..But then again I guess with the way things have gone at Marshall for football over the last 8 years you guys are more than happy to crow about preseason hype and paper championships.

For me I kinda wish everyone was ignoring ECU...We tend to produce better when not much is expected of us..

Lets see, two conference championships vs Marshall's 0. I think that counts for something.

Well it is mainly a few Marshall fans with so much venom right now...Not sure why. Anyway, hopefully that game does mean something but somehow I suspect it will not have the implications that most of predicting.

Preseason hype and predictions often times are off base and for both of us to actually produce as expected and meet in that game for all the marbles probably will not happen.

It will be tough for us to go up there that time of year and win...Marshall is a pretty tough place to win on the road and they have a very solid home record.
