Fools are crazy to open Pandora's box of pay for play
Once the pay for play Pandora's box is opened, it won't be long before "what is fair pay for services rendered" is on the table. What is a Heisman RB at Alabama worth? Greedy fools better be careful what they wish for. Throwing a few scraps to the G5 isn't a bad deal.
We see what getting too greedy did to Texas. They pushed A&M to the SEC and now A&M is absolutely exploding and will soon leave Texas in their dust.
Be careful what you wish for because you may get it.

RE: Fools are crazy to open Pandora's box of pay for play
It's all pay to play to an extent (tuition and all those expenses are paid), it's the extent that is the question. Right now, the power schools don't care for the current set-up as they have too many poor kids who simultaneously prevented from getting jobs or signing endorsements, bring in millions to their schools, and can't afford what even a lot of other college students can easily get. That's an absolute recipe for rule breaking and schools being embarrassed.
Unfortunately, I don't think this will open the flood gates. The schools want a little more money going to the students, but they still want it limited and aren't going to go really big.
The reason I say unfortunately though is that opening the flood gate for the players is the only fair thing at this point. I don't' care for what it would do to the game, but the schools decided years ago they would do whatever they could to maximize their revenue and exposure (exposure is essentially advertising for them). It's not fair to do that only one way. I don't think schools should directly pay more, but the students should be allowed to accept anything from a booster provided its over the table. If the schools will change conferences, add games, change the post season a ton (add more bowl games, go to the BCS, go to the CFP), add CCGs, conference basketball tournaments, change rules to help TV (timing rules), build bigger stadiums and require more donations to get seats, etc, then the players sure as heck shouldn't be prevented from making money themselves.

They aren't going past actual cost of attendance because they know it opens the box.

Agreed (and I say that wanting it to happen).
