Exclamation When will Georgia Tech cut their losses and make a change?
It couldn't be any more clear that hiring CPJ was a huge mistake. Their course curriculum already handicapped that program enough. Why the hell would they go out and make it 10 times worse getting a coach that runs a high school offense? They will never land the big name recruits. Ever. Elite football players couldn't care less about academics and are only interested in making it to the NFL. You can be damn sure their road will never go through North Ave.

I mean, seriously, I know the "rival" is laughable, but let's not take away from the excitement that is Clean, Old-Fashioned Hate.

They have a new AD. Usually they want to bring in their own guy if the current coach is under fire. We shall see, but I hope he stays as it helps Ga Southern.

Running a "simple" offense makes it difficult to recruit elite-level QBs and WRs. Now, that is a big deal all by itself, but you can still get a strong defense, kicking game, running backs, and interior linemen.

I think we can all agree linemen win Championships. There is no way they can recruit top offensive linemen. A top 20 o-lineman will not be interested in diving at opposing defenders knees for 4 years. Especially if they have dreams of playing in the NFL. They will never land an elite WR corp, or pro-style running backs. A top tier RB will not want to go to GT as their career can be run into the ground with all the carries they would average. A prime example is Marcus Lattimore. Spurrier ran that poor kid into the ground making him tote the rock 30+ times a game. GT backs could possibly have as many carries on average even splitting the carries with a second or 3rd back. UGA's two studs both committed to Georgia with intentions to split the carries which will prolong their career and better their chances to stay fresh through school.

Defense is another story. Again falling on Paul's shoulders, however. It is his team and he is responsible for locating a coach that can lead that defense. It's obvious he knows nothing about it as they have been dismal on that side of the ball.

My point in all of this is, why would they go out and get a coach that further handcuffs their program? They already have a tough time landing the elite thugs that teams like Alabama, Tennessee, USCe, LSU, etc., are able to get with their joke requirements for becoming eligible. How Reuben Foster, was even accepted at Alabama, I will never know. That dude should not have been playing D1 football. Saban does his thing though.

Back on topic... Sometimes I venture off the path a little, lol. I don't understand how they even thought this would be a good idea. That system works perfectly at smaller schools like Georgia Southern, but the ACC isn't exactly elite and they will be lucky to finish with a .500 or better record year in and year out.

Time for a change Tech fans? Losing to UGA every year has to be getting old.

Thanks for the post. When you want to have a healthy debate, be sure to chime in. Until then, you don't have to show your ass. The Bulldog Nation, myself included, understand you're bitter. I would be upset too, if I were a Tech grad. Keep your head up. Good luck in 2013!

RE: When will Georgia Tech cut their losses and make a change?
I think Georgia Tech's offense has been figured out by upper-tier teams. From my observation, if teams either have good talent on D or if they have had at least 2 weeks to plan, GT's offense can be contained.

Their offense would probably become very good like the 'old-school Nebraska teams' if they can get a QB that can both run and pass. Most of the QB's they had could run the option very well, but passing the ball wasn't their thing.

Paul Johnson seems very confident in his offense. Also, he knows the culture at GT is similar with Navy, meaning that he knows that he is not going to get elite talent consistently and that recruiting will have plenty of obstacles.

I believe that GT's academic standards is a major stumbling block due to their requirements for Calculus. (I believe I read on another GT message board that Calculus was needed prior to enrolling? I'm not sure because it was a few years ago when I read it). If that's truly the case, how many 5- & 4-star recruits can they realistically get?

Weren't they in the ACC Championship game last year ?
Didn't they man-handle USC in a bowl ?

I think if they get a decent defense going they will be very competitive in the ACC for a while.
They'll be very happy with that.

Solid post. I agree completely. Not sure about their Calculus requirements, but I do know it is smarter to go to a different school and get as much Calculus out of the way as you can before enrolling at GT. Taking Calculus and others like Differential Equations at Tech can't be any fun, but I imagine the student athletes there for football major in Underwater Basket Weaving and don't have to worry about Calculus.

Their offense has been figured out, and I don't see that changing anytime soon. The problem with finding a QB that can both run and pass is that they are rare and the elite ones are gobbled up by contenders. I do think that if CPJ wants to keep his job he will have to mix things up a lot more. Sad, I wish they were successful in the ACC as they will never beat UGA again running that cute offense.

You are correct. They were in the ACC Championship. However, they were 6-6 and I seriously doubt they think they were deserving of being in that game. I do know that they didn't come in first place in their division which was the worst division in all of college football last year.

The Mud Dogs of SCLSU would have man-handled USC last year.

GT was in the ACC championship only because Miami and North Carolina weren't eligible.

I do wonder long term how viable from a recruiting standpoint how GT will be able to recruit to that system.

Ga tech averaged 33.6 points per game last year which was 4th of 12 teams. Looks like the problem is not the offense.

Again. That falls on CPJ, but I will remind you that they played in the worst division of one of the worst conferences in all of college football. Also, they averaged only 18 against ranked opponents, one of those was Clemson which I'm sure we can all agree had one of the worst defenses in the Nation last year. They did give up 27 to Ball State, 31 to BC and 48 to NCST. Without Clemson, they would have averaged less than 14 a game.

Their offense is horrid against elite teams and their defense is even worse. How they continue to believe in CPJ is beyond me.

I don't mean to sound naive but sentiments like this really trouble me. If academics are completely meaningless - and some of you seem to almost revel in that notion - then I must ask what the hell is the point in following college football at all?

I mean if it is just the Triple A version of the real thing then why not focus your attention on the major league version of that same product: the NFL?

To me, embracing the notion that academics are irrelevant means that embracing CFB itself is foolish. It would be like declaring one's self a huge Birmingham Barons fan or Columbus Clippers fan instead of being a Chicago White Sox fan or New York Yankees fan. That makes no sense to me.

These are universities that sponsor intercollegiate athletics on a large scale, not semi-pro franchises. I understand that many schools cheat their balls off and that many of the fans of those schools either don't care or openly advocate cheating. However, we need agree on a system that makes the risks of getting caught far greater than the potential rewards. That means that when Oregon, for example, gets caught flagrantly cheating by hiring a runner, the penalties need to be a lot more severe than a slap on the wrist, followed by a kiss on the cheek and a promise to never do it again. Make it hurt - no TV or no TV revenue, multi-million dollar fines, suspend the coaches that do it for a year or more, or ban them altogether. Make it sting and restore some semblance of integrity to a sport badly in need of it.

If people insist on looking at these teams as franchises, then I'll simply choose to follow the franchises that play at the game's highest level, not the B level franchises.

When you start off a post with "It couldn't be any more clear that hiring CPJ was a huge mistake" you're not worth arguing with. If you want to debate things, you don't throw out lines like that and expect much. You've already made up your mind and won't listen to anything that doesn't support what you said. You can do better.

The offense isn't the problem. It has won 10 times as many games as it has lost. Nearly all the signature wins under PJ have been the offense overcoming an inept defense. The problem has been:

1) DEFENSE ... we'll see if Roof fixes this, but I have my doubts
2) A QB who is a real pass threat and a home run threat running it ... this should be hugely upgraded this year with Vad Lee and Justin Thomas
3) Recruiting ... seems to be much improved this year
