I'm sure that they will get something from Syracuse, Rutgers, and/or UCONN. Like MSG and YES, it might have to be sublicensed from ESPN, or some other party, and it may not be football games (although they might be able to grab a game or two from each school). However, I'm pretty sure that there is plenty of basketball content available.

Also, there is the possibility of BIG EAST games. Obviously STJ and SH will be of some interest in the city.

Despite the OP not putting it in the title, the tweet clearly states that the Big East will also be on YES.

That really is the important question here Bullet. Kudos for asking it. Because what appears to be happening is that ESPN is grabbing up rights and mitigating expenses by selling off the ones they don't want. Fox on the other hand is sniffing around for bargain programming. ESPN is becoming an agent of programming as well as a network. It's like running your retail store out of your wholesale business. FOX affiliates become outlet stores while ESPN produces prime time product.

Not really. FS1 will not be showing any of these games and to the average Joe they will have no idea it's Fox who is putting them on. To them it's just YES. This is Fox just making it's regional property worth while after baseball season is over. Fox is still going to be producing top of the line prime time product as well. Now they are making one of their regional properties relevant for more than just baseball season.

I'm not sure I totally agree, but okay. Now it begs another question. If tier 3 is getting shopped how is the ACC ever going to have its own network in the near future? It seems to me that this kind of arrangement precludes the formation of an ACC Network.

an acc network isn't going to launch until 2016 since it takes time to work out everything

Is it fair to assume then that this announcement for today is for 1 year only?

Kind of sidestepping Syracuse there? Likely to be some people who'd like to see Syracuse. Actually, likely to be some who'd like to see GTech ~ they have a lot of northeast coast alumni.

Because it's bigger news about the ACC, which has never previously enjoyed any real presence in NYC. It also is an indication that an ACC Network may not be coming to pass. The Big East already enjoys a noticeable presence in NYC and that will likely continue. Don't feel slighted.

I don't think that this has any/much bearing on a future ACC Network.

Eh. Maybe or maybe not, but it is clear that instead of trying to buy back rights in an effort to consolidate them that more are being resold, making it potentially more expensive to buy back later. If there were pressing plans for a network, then I would think deals like this would not be happening as ESPN and the ACC would be trying to buy back those rights, not putting them on more platforms.

Maybe, maybe not. What if the ACC Network is not going to launch until, say, 2016?

It may or may not be more expensive to buy back rights later.

How long is this YES deal? Will ESPN launch an ACC Network with or without these particular "third tier" rights?

I defer to guys like adcorbett and others who work in the TV industry and/or know a whole lot about TV rights than me.

I just don't think anyone has enough info one way or another to jump to any conclusions.

All good points, but this is not good news for the prospects for an ACC in the near term. The more entities that own the media rights the harder it will be to buy them back because everyone will at want to make a profit, and some may not want to sell.

At the very least it looks like ESPN and the ACC are either not presently making any headway towards recouping these rights or are not really trying to acquire them. If they were serious about getting such rights back then FOX would likely not have taken them off the market. By selling them FOX would not get any of the increased value caused by ESPN or the ACC trying to get them back. And of course I'm aware FOX owns about 1/2 of YES, but that still means only 1/2 of the profits.

In short, since FOX is selling they are not speculating it appears experts in the industry do not think the value of these rights will increase in the future, which means no one is willing to pay more for them in the future (ACC or ESPN), or FOX is intentionally trying to make it harder for the ACC or ESPN to repurchase these rights. Neither is a good sign for an ACC network any time soon, especially if the former is correct. Unless this just a one year deal, which is unlikely.

length of the agreement hasn't been announced so I have no idea but the acc deal with CNY central in upstate new York ran for 3 years until 2016 so i'd guess this could be the same
