Good. This will give the kids in Lexington an opportunity to finish 8th grade.

The other way of looking at it is that it's forcing kids who are not doing work (and very distributive in the meantime) and possibly missing half the days anyway to continue school even if they aren't going to pass.

I have mixed feeling. I think we try to give kids a lot of chances to succeed, but I also think we have gone way too far with the idea of simply being there adds a lot. It's true in high school and far more true in college. I'm not saying it's a bad law, just that it's got negatives too.

I know from experience that the troublemakers are the ones who don't want to be there.

They will need to resurrect the truant officers
as well as
increase the number of school security officers

RE: Kentucky raises H.S. dropout age to 18 !
I would not mind allowing someone with zero intention on going to a university to enroll in a trade school after their sophomore year. I used to be a teacher, and by their junior year, only the tier of university someone is able to attend is in doubt. Whether or not someone is going to go at all is pretty much decided. Many of my kids that were trouble in the classroom were very talented and motivated to do other things, especially fields where they could make some really good money and be happy working with their hands, like plumbing, electrical, mechanics, clerical, etc. Honestly, I would encourage people to become a certified "Master" in a technical field than a B.A. graduate in a field with no professional certification (like Communications, Philosophy, Psychology, etc.) and did not intend to go on to a Master's degree.

We need more skilled trade workers. I agree wholeheartedly that we shouldn't be pushing every kid to get a college education. There's no shame in not going to college and there are a lot of careers out there that can be mastered by those who choose not to do so. We've been jamming a lot of square pegs into round holes in this arena for a while and we shouldn't continue to do that in the future.

There is still something to be had from the Teachers whom will not give up on Their students. 18 is a chance for another try to find some life long dignity in Graduating from some school. Might be the best shot They have at some success in life. at least a start.
