Week 1: G5 v P5. Best Games of the Week
I'm G5 fan (except for WVU!), so don't flame on me because I pose an interesting question.

National Success for any G5 program will rest largely on how well they do in OOC P5 games. In week one, each conference has at least one game that has potential to be an exciting match up. Any thoughts on how these "best of the G5/P5 match ups" (IMHO) will turn out?

MAC: Northern Illinois at Iowa
SBC: Kentucky at Western Kentucky
C-USA: LaTech at NC State
MWC: Boise State at Washington
AAC: Purdue at Cincinnati

I think Western Kentucky, Boise State and Cincinnati have the best shot. Thoughts?

I don't know how good Iowa is going to be so it's hard for me to say what NIU's chances are. La Tech is losing a ton of players, and while I don't think NC State is going to be that great, especially early, that's going to be hard for them to win. The other 3 I'd probably have the G5 team as the favorite.

I think the Kentucky/WKU game is a neutral site game, not a road game for Kentucky. Kind of changes the equation somewhat.

I think one that next year will be a g5/p5 that is interesting is Rutgers at Fresno St. Huge game for Fresno.

Nevada vs UCLA also. Good test for both teams.

Not only do Boise and Cincinnati have the best shots, it would be a big upset if they lost. Last I saw UC was a double digit favorite over the Boilermakers.

UC is a BCS team (for this year) and has been to 2 BCS bowls. It would be a big upset if they lost.

I watched Cody Fajardo vs. USF and agree that Nevada can be offensively very effective. I think UCLA has too much going for them this year and will likely win the PAC South, outright (but get zonked by Stanford in the PAC Championship game, btw). Not sure that Nevada can beat them out of the gate. But if Fajardo gets hot and plays a little defense, who knows. Could be interesting.

NOt so sure about the Boise State/Washington game. As I recall, their last two meetings were fairly close affairs. I expect BSU to win, but I think it will be a tough game.

That's how I picked them.

Boise and Cincinnati should be big favorites. Did Northern Illinois lose their coach in the off-season? If not, I might bet on No. Ill. to win depending on what the odds are. LaTech lost their coach but NCState also changed coaches. So I'll take NCST because they're at home.

Great thread idea!
This is worthy of looking at for EVERY week, IMO.

MAC also has Ohio vs Lville & Toledo at Florida.

While I don't expect Toledo to beat Florida, the Gators have been known to start slow in their opening OOC games(last year BGSU was down only 7 going into the 4th quarter) and Toledo has 2 Phil Street All Americans. Ohio returns Tettleton at QB and their star RB (Blankenship)

The Huskies have an excellent chance to beat Iowa with Jordan Lynch returning at QB while Iowa's starter has no collegiate starting experience.

Boise beat Washington in their bowl game last year by only 2 and this game is at Seattle.

NIU lost its head coach, but retains about half its staff, including both coordinators (OC Carey was promoted to HC, DC Niemann is staying on, and QB coach Cole was promoted to OC). The transition should be relatively smooth. Iowa is a tossup and if NIU gets past it they should be favored the rest of the way.
