Maryland is probably WVU's biggest rival now, since that's the only eastern team WVU is still playing at the moment. And unless WVU can get Pitt and Syracuse to be of a mind to keep those rivalries going, that's the way things will remain...
Pitt, Syracuse, and Penn State have the most history with WVU. But none of us are playing presently, which makes it a moot point. All the old eastern indies have begun working on different paths, because we wouldn't work together...

RE: Least Valuable Additions in Realignment
I think you have hit upon a point regarding the weakness of college football in the northeast. For nearly a century, the dominant powers in the northeast were the Ivy League teams or the military academies. Navy played in a defacto MNC game as late as 1963. The Ivy had a legitimate Heisman candidate as late as 1969 and a ranked team as late as 1970. With the inability of the military academies to keep up and the Ivies de-emphasis in the 50s and the rise of the pros in the 60s, college football was pretty much wiped out in the region. Imagine what would happen to college football interest in the Midwest if the Big 10 schools all decided to go non-scholarship.
You have BC, UConn and Rutgers trying to take the place of Harvard, Yale and Princeton.

RE: Least Valuable Additions in Realignment
Prior to the start of the AP Poll in 1936, an Ivy League school had a share of an MNC (by SEC standards-if any system declared you a champ, you were) the vast majority of years from 1869 on. The only years they weren't were 1914 (Army was 1 of the 3), 1917 (Georgia Tech was unanimous), 1918 (Pitt was one of 2), 1926 (Navy and Lafayette from NE were 2 of 5 with MNCs), 1928 (GT/USC and Detroit-no NE schools), 1929 (Pitt was one of three), 1930 ND/AL-no NE schools, 1931 (Pitt was one of three), 1932 (Colgate was 1 of 3) and 1934 (MN/AL-no northeast schools). In 67 years Ivy schools had a share 57 years. Other northeast schools had a share 6 of the remaining 10 years. They left a void in the northeast.

That is sort of misleading.
Pitt and SU have played every year since 1950 and that is obviously continuing as cross-divisional protected partners in the ACC.
SU and PSU are playing this season (and had previously played in 2008 and '09) and are scheduled to play again in 2020 and 2021.
Pitt has a four game series scheduled with PSU from 2016-2019 and both sides have talked about extending it.
WVU has apparently talked to both Pitt and PSU although nothing has resulted from that yet.
The former Big Four schools will be playing each other in some capacity moving forward, just not all playing annually. Obviously Pitt-SU is annual and perhaps Pitt-PSU might turn into a somewhat regular game. Pitt-WVU will be played at some point after the Pitt-PSU series is figured out long-term. SU-PSU will be infrequent. WVU will play Pitt and PSU infrequently. Don't know about SU-WVU.

That was basically my point, so there was no misdirection what so ever. IMO a rival is someone you play every year, and the only school from the east that WVU is playing annually at the moment is Maryland...
Who knows how much longer that will continue? The Terps move to the B1G could end up killing that series too...
I'm sure the old eastern indies will all be playing games OOC eventually. Those games would be made for TV events, especially if both schools are in contention for conference titles. But that's down a road that hasn't been built yet...

Oh, you said "none of us are playing presently" but meant no one is currently scheduled to play WVU. Pitt, SU, and PSU are all scheduled up to some degree. (and don't get me wrong, I'd advocated for Pitt-WVU over the PSU series, but that is just my personal opinion)
Maryland and WVU are scheduled through 2017. UMD is currently over-scheduled for 2016 by one game with the 9-game B10 schedule coming on board that year. They're going to have to move somebody or buy them out, but it probably won't be WVU. I would have to think they'll keep WVU because, right now, it doesn't seem like any ACC schools want to deal with them. Pitt has no history of playing them and SU has limited history with them. They won't schedule Navy. I don't know who else they'd schedule out-of-conference, as far as a regional game, other than WVU, unless the other ACC schools soften. I'd be surprised if UMD drops WVU. However, WVU might drop Maryland if they can get some sort of regular rotation of Pitt, SU and/or PSU.
