BELLE FOODS who purchased the Bruno holdings, has asked for bankruptcy protection
They have announced several store closings with some in the B'ham metro area. Like with large banks, B'ham used to have a number of grocery chains, but I can't think of one today.

They made a big to do over it when they purchased the company & you kind of had a feeling it was a losing proposition.
While the Walmart way of doing things is definitely not the best, it is very hard to compete with them.

I hate Walmart, but if I need a basketball goal, a bicycle, a car battery, new sheets, a drumset, and milk, I only have to make one trip.

For those who are not mechanically talented, Wal-Mart is very handy for minor things for cars like oil changes, lube jobs and batteries.

Never take your car to walmart for anything, ever. As a former employee, the stories I heard about the way they could screw up a car are mind boggling.

Yes, no other auto shop handles those things.
Yes, but not usually at their price and as mentioned in Post #3, there is a lot to do while you wait.

There is a good article in the Sunday NEWS on the various grocery store chains in the Jeffco area. They spotlight 3 in particular which have local neighborhood followings. Worth a read on this topic.
