All American Doug McDermott is Now A Walk-On

"Gibbs rejoining the roster meant that Creighton had one more body than available scholarships, and there was no way that Greg McDermott was going to cut another player’s free ride. So, the Bluejays coach is ponying up."

i thought children of employees get free tuition. Many schools have this perk. If so that room and board are the only expenses that need to be picked up

Apparently not. Also with that rule that employee must be there for a certain amount of time before they get that bonus. You don't want someone to get a job, immediately enroll their child then four years later quit.

Also of note, Doug (and VCU's sophomore Treveon Graham are both) playing under Billy Donovan's and Shaka Smart's Team USA right now. Tre got the most minutes in today's match, but all of them are avsilabe on ESPN3/U etc.

Makes sense. A friend of mine teaches one class at a local college. He gets tuition breaks for himself that increase the longer he's there to include spouse and kids. At some point it's free and he gets free tuition at "partner" schools all over. Including places lie villanova providence Georgetown andnothwra infant hinknof right now. All of these schools have better academic reps than where he is.

Doug's father, Greg, is one of the really good guys in college coaching.
Trivia: When Doug McDermott was a H.S. Jr, he almost signed with the U of North Dakota, where his dad had been an assistant coach and where Doug was born. Doug really began moving up the recruiting charts late in this Jr year (playing on the same H.S. team as Harrison Barnes didn't hurt). Instead, Doug signed with N Iowa, which was also coached by a N Dakota former assistant coach, Ben Jacobson (who tended to follow Greg McDermott in his coaching progressions and was a close family friend). When father Greg went to Creighton from Iowa St, Jacobson released Doug to go there.
Hoping this coaching tandem of McDermott and Jacobson go far in their coaching careers.
25 years before McDermott and Jacobson began coaching at UND, there was a trio of future NBA coaches at UND simultaneously: assistant Jimmy Rodgers (future Boston Celtics coach), head coach Bill Fitch (NBA Hall of Fame Coach), and player Phil Jackson (that Phil Jackson with 11 rings.)
