American, ACC to play in bowl

By Brett McMurphy | ESPN

The American Athletic Conference and ACC have agreed to a six-year deal with the Military Bowl presented by Northrop Grumman beginning in 2014, sources said.

The bowl will be played at the Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium in Annapolis, Md. The first five Military Bowls were played at RFK Stadium in Washington, D.C., until the game was moved to Navy's home stadium in 2013.

The bowl will remain at Navy under the new contract, sources said. Navy will join the American Athletic Conference as a football-only member in 2015.

From 2014-19, the Military Bowl is expected to share the American's third through sixth picks and the ACC's seventh through 10th selections, sources said.

In May, the Military Bowl announced that the game in 2013, the final year of the current bowl cycle, would pit the ACC against Conference USA.

The American Athletic Conference's addition of the Military Bowl in 2014 helps the league offset the losses of three bowls currently associated with the conference, formerly known as the Big East.

Bowls that decided not to renew with the American after this season: Russell Athletic (ACC vs. Big 12), Pinstripe (Big Ten vs. ACC) and Belk (SEC vs. ACC).

The ACC has formally announced bowl tie-ins starting in 2014 with the Orange and Pinstripe. Besides the Russell Athletic and Belk bowls, sources told ESPN the ACC also will be affiliated with the Capital One (when a Big Ten team plays in the Orange Bowl), Sun, Gator/Music City and a new Detroit bowl.

American Athletic commissioner Mike Aresco has said his league is exploring the possibility of starting a new bowl in Miami. The most likely venue would be Marlins Park. The American also is expected to keep tie-ins in 2014 with the BBVA Compass Bowl and the Beef O'Brady's Bowl St. Petersburg.

I'm hearing it will be the American #3-6 team against the ACC #7-10.

I guess it is better than the Little Rock Bowl or the Shreveport Bowl.

This is a good pickup for the AAC--Power five competition and an attractive destination. Annapolis is a beautiful town on the Chesapeake Bay. This is a reasonable drive from Cincy; an attractive holiday road trip from the tri-state with Washington DC on the way.

Just bring your parka. Not a warm weather destination.

That is a pretty solid add to the lineup. Lots of tailgating spaces around the stadium and if the weather is OK
that is a can do trip.

Agreed. If it's not a BCS bowl for the 'Cats in a destination city, we're better off bringing tons of fans within a day's drive (Memphis, Charlotte, Birmingham). This one would generate similar support and continue to build a reputation for UC selling lots of tickets--the only real objective the bowl organizers have anyway.

Love Annapolis - just not in late December. I visited the beautiful town including a Bay boat tour around the Academy when UC played Va Tech at FedEx Field this past September.
