So the average ranks are:

AAC: 16.75
MWC: 22.17 (PS: Utah State is not a MAC school)
MAC: 29.53
CUSA: 32.83

That's just on the Windows calculator, not a spreadsheet, so mea culpa if there's a data entry error in there somewhere.

Fixed it... Thanks. I didn't include the Sun Belt cause I was simply tired of figuring it up.

this isn't completely accurate though because Temple was in the MAC for 2 of 3 years but its counting all 3 towards AAC and UMass was in FCS for 2 of 3 years but all 3 are being credited to the MAC.

The last three years defines the worst stretch in Akron football history BY FAR. Before that, we were a historically .500 program. And it's all thanks to possibly the worst coaching hire in the history of sports: Rob Ianello.

I wouldn't read too much into averages. What would be more interesting to me is trends. Which programs are on the rise and which are on the decline? That would be a more meaningful analysis to me.

Clearly he is naming current/ future conference affiliation since a number of teams didn't switch till today and others won't switch till next year (ECU, Tulane, etc).

Then you've got a start ... now go back and do the averages for the three years before that, and you'll see any schools that are moving up or down strongly over the past six years.

The OP doesn't claim to be an average of the strength of each conference over the past three years ... it is what it says it as, ranking the schools that will make up each conference by their ratings over the past three years. Its only one piece of information, since obviously the conference that a school was competing in will affect its Sagarin rating, simply due to the nature of any rating that connects teams indirectly based on common opponents.

As it stands, its rough confirmation of the three tier AAC/MWC, MAC/CUSA, and Sunbelt view of the Go5. IIRC, you argue that the MAC should be considered as among the top rank of the Go5, so obviously you'd not view this method of ranking conferences as the final word, but a ranking system isn't flawed just because it gives a different answer than the one we want to hear.

Y'all are pretty darn tough. Seriously, if we could get y'all to win a few of the bigger OOC games you might turn into a flagship of sorts for the conference.

Here's to two (2) ECU wins over Tulsa this year!

I'm pretty disappointed with ECU's standing on that list. That's not acceptable.

I thought we were counting the number of schools named after cities.

Rather stupid leaving out the SBC, but the original post was from a fansof a school in a conference totally decimated by realignment. Fact is that schools conference did not match up very well with the SBC before realignment, and took most of the bad teams from the SBC this go around, so maybe that was the reason for doing so.

RE: MWC/C-USA/AAC/MAC teams... how each team has stacked up over the last 3 years...

Thanks for that, it really helps out the MAC rank average:

AAC = 18.3
MWC = 24.9
MAC = 33.6
CUSA = 37.7
SB = 40.5

I uploaded these numbers into a spreadsheet, so I can get the simple and centrally weighted Sagarin rating averages too (simple | weighted):

AAC = 67.66 | 66.12
MWC = 65.67 | 65.50
MAC = 60.73 | 60.99
CUSA = 59.44 | 59.16
SB = 57.39 | 58.02

Note that these are ranked on the centrally weighted average, to be consistent with the Sagarin conference rankings ~ the simple weighted average flips the AAC and MWC. On these rankings / ratings, its more like AAC/MWC; MAC; CUSA/Sunbelt.

AAC is 1.99 ahead of MWC on your simple average and .62 on your weighted.
MAC is 1.29 ahead of CUSA on your simple and 1.83 on your weighted.
CUSA is 2.05 ahead of SB on your simple and 1.14 on your weighted.
So your separating MAC from CUSA while grouping CUSA with Sun Belt makes absolutely no sense at all.
