Old Dominion is celebrating its ascent into Conference USA today by blasting e-mails to 50,000 alumni and fans, distributing cookies to the media and unveiling a new website.
Men's basketball coach Jeff Jones will make rounds to local radio and television stations beginning at 6:30 this morning to promote ODU's new conference. He and senior associate athletic director Debbie White will also deliver cookies to area TV and radio stations and newspapers.
At 12:01 this morning, e-mails were to be sent to 50,000 people who have purchased tickets to ODU events, alerting them to the conference change.
Conference USA, meanwhile, has spent $7,350 to rent three billboards in Hampton Roads to welcome the Monarchs - on Interstate 64 in Hampton near the Hampton Roads Bridge-Tunnel, on I-64 in Chesapeake near in the intersection with I-464 and on Monticello Avenue near downtown Norfolk. The video board at Nauticus has been welcoming Conference USA to Norfolk for nearly a week.
The change of conference won't be reflected on many parts of campus until later this summer. Colonial Athletic Association logos still adorn most ODU facilities. They all will be replaced with C-USA logos.
Foreman Field will receive a new C-USA logo on the turf later this month even though the Monarchs don't officially begin playing C-USA football until 2014.
We will be playing VCU, Richmond, GMU and W&M. Some of the conference games might be moved around for TV.
Cattles says 7 min in, "Let's stop talking about ODU basketball" ugh.
Jones says that he doesn't want a shot clock cut from 35 to 30. He also really doesn't want College Basketball to be NBA basketball. He wants more of a balanced game instead of an offense-fueled NBA.

Sheesh, here we go.......I guess he wanted to talk Patriot football/Aaron Hernandez with Coach Jones?

The fact that jones doesn't want the shot clock reduced from 35 to 30 is much more telling than you think. Anyone expecting jones to run an up-tempo program long term needs a wake up call.
RE: ODU is making sure its move to C-USA gets noticed
JJ on Johnny D this morning:
Who do you lean on for help with transition? Chatted with other coaches with travel questions and the c-usa office. Being not the only new guy helps the transition.
Restated rivalries will be maintained with ooc games against VCU, GMU, etc.
Doesn't want to set the bar too low. Aware the fanbase is passionate and not very patient.
JD says he sounds more energetic than last time they spoke and more alert. JJ says he was able to finally get away for a few days last week and maybe that helps, says its been pretty grueling.
I agree with that. Sounded like he had a bit more personality and pep in his voice than prior clips I've heard.
