Rutgers to become B1G school overnight

Quote:In an instant, Rutgers will become a 65,000-student school with a $3 billion budget. It will rank among the top 25 research universities in the nation, with more research spending than Harvard, Yale or Northwestern University.

Wow! Impressive. As of tomorrow, Rutgers will be in the top 3 in enrollment and have one of the largest research revenues in the country. Definitely B1G-worthy. Congrats!!

RE: Rutgers to become B1G school overnight
Thanks Bob.

As with all things in NJ this was dirty politics. UMDNJ was rife with mismanagement and millions of dollars in the red. No-show political patronage jobs were common. For a little while it looked like UMDNJ was going to be bankrupt. RU saw this as an opportunity to finally get its Med school back. What we got was that and a whole lot of stuff we really didn't want. It is going to take a long time to straiten this mess up and figure out how to get the books in order. In the mean time, at least RU really has become Big State U.

My dad took classes at Stonier Graduate School of Banking (is that still a part of Rutgers?) in the early 1980s and was amazed at the horror-stories he heard from the NJ-raised students. 30 years later, he still uses that as the benchmark of political corruption.

I applaud Chris Christie's efforts to clean up the mess, but I have a feeling that once he's gone, it'll take about 10 minutes for everything to go back to "normal".

Yeah, sustainability is the big question about this merger. It doesn't sound like it was even close to being embraced by the majority of the faculty at the university.

The Rutgers 1000 Version 2.0 is probably just about ready to hit. Hopefully, they'll get a better website...

Eh, as governor he's been pretty much part of the machine, and has attempted to portion off parts off Rutgers to his political cronies. Luckily Rutgers has a measure of legally enshrined independence due to its history as a private school/colonial college so we could tell him to pound sand. So of course Christie's current plan is to remove that independence...

Rutgers was always huge though, even before the merger I think we were at least in the top half of B1G schools in terms of student body...actually going by Wikipedia numbers we were tied with tOSU for the top spot.

RE: Rutgers to become B1G school overnight
The question is will this move do anything to up the interest in Rutgers' sports teams. Is Rutgers on the verge of being the next Ohio State in sports?

Based on events in the last few months, Rutgers athletic department seems just as dysfunctional as New Jersey's internal politics. But if they can ever sort out the corruption and other inefficiencies, then watch out when that sleeping giant wakes up.

That's a bit of a jump. But I certainly think this can give them a big enough bump to be a legitimate contender in various athletic ventures. I think they need to be competitive in many Olympic sports...be a 9-3 football team most years in football...and make the NCAA tourney in men's bball every other year. That's a good first step for decade 1 in the Big Ten. After that, maybe we can start talking about Rutgers being on OSU/PSU/UM level.

stonier is still there. odd thing about rutgers is it is known for both business and agriculture.
what christie really did was a book keeping trick. he just transfered a whole lot of bad dept off of the states books and dumped it on rutgers. but the dept is still there to be dealt with.

Rutgers FY 2011 had $473,159,000 in R&D expenditures which was 40th among all universities. UMDNJ had $234,354,000 which was 86th among all universities. The combination will give Rutgers $707,513,000 in R&D expenditures, which would be 25th among FY2011 expenditures.

For some reason he loves to troll anything Rutgers positive, negative or neutral. I don't know what his beef is frankly. I've literally never had bad dealings either in-person or online with any other Pitt fans.
