How ODU moved to C-USA and JMU didn't
check out this article. It has some damning evidence against JMU's administration.
The detail included gives great insight into a program that seized the opportunity.
Also, our Fredericksburg Dukes dropped the ball on Recon. How did we not have a fly on the wall when ODU, JMU, and Delaware met in your backyard?05-mafia

That was a very interesting read. By July 1, we'll know our fate as well.

Wow...I'm stunned.

"Three days after MacLeod's visit, Selig and Harnage traveled to Fredericksburg to meet with the athletic directors and chief financial officers from James Madison and Delaware - the CAA's two traditional football powers. ODU wanted to see if they had an interest in joining it in moving up. Neither would commit."

The clock is ticking, and someone has a lot of explaining to do.

Yeah this worries me. Did they not realize VCU or GMU were about to leave the CAA at that point?

It's interesting that Martha Saunders is somehow spun as a wise woman in this article...she was canned at Southern Miss, and is now Prez at the U. of West Florida in Pensacola...where she's pushing football, and the faculty are incredulous. Doubt she's long for the Prez. job at UWF either, but her stripes as an ex-jock keep her pushing her one-note song (i.e sports).

I'm also intrigued by the fact that a number of posters have contended for the past year that the meeting with ODU/JMU/UD about CUSA never occurred. Looks like we finally have firm confirmation that it not only occurred, but that we directly declined to join up with them in a potential move. Very troubling...ODU offered us a lifeboat, and we decided to swim to the deserted island instead.

Yeah that also scares me, if we declined an offer then, why would JMU change their answer now?

I think it is important to note that it doesn't say we had a specific offer, but I doubt ODU would take it upon themselves to court UD and JMU without some assurance the three of us were wanted somewhere together. I'm not sure how much more of an ideal situation we could have found.

Just looking at the members in C-USA, perhaps JMU didn't want to associate with them because, for the most part, they are not strong academically, also the instability of C-USA probably made JMU not want to join either? Idk.

RE: How ODU moved to C-USA and JMU didn't
Here is the bottom line as stated in the article:

Whatever the school decided would potentially affect 26,000 students, 120,000 alumni, 4,500 employees and tens of thousands of residents of Hampton Roads. Yet, the decision ultimately would fall on the shoulders of just one man: ODU President John Broderick.

We were in transition between Rose and Alger at the time. The timing just wasn't right for JMU.

And, I had a hidden camera and tape recorder at that meeting in Fredericksburg. I am currently shopping it around for the highest bidder!

how hard is this for you guys to understand over and over again?

ODU had Broderick who was in favor of a move if it were the best option.
we had Rose who was not going to move....EVER!

the President's make these decisions.

Just because Rose was against a move, does NOT mean those currently at JMU are. It's a different ballgame now.

To blame this failure on timing is pathetic, we had over 5 years to prepare for this, we all new change was coming, the reason JMU did not pursue what was in the best interest the University is very clear - Rose and the lifelong accountants are completely incompetent.

There are countless examples of this; finally when we needed a leadership team the most, they failed.

Interesting article, but I'm not sure that one sentence noting a meeting with us, UD, and ODU where neither us nor UD would commit is "damning evidence."

Now, if the reporter had a transcript from that meeting and we had been told, "We have a deal where you have a spot. Come with us." and we declined that... well that would be a different story.

How ODU moved to C-USA and JMU didn't
The best point made so far is, if we said no then, why now? Heck ECU was still a member.

If we said no for academics, I can accept that as a valid reason, even though it would not be my personal decision.

If we said no because we weren't ready...that would tick me off. If it was Rose's call under the whole "not on my watch" theory ... I'd be really, really pissed. Timing is everything.

If we announce a move this year, none of this will matter. If we're stuck in FCS for 3-4 + more years without a communicated plan.. Well folks, that's a disaster.

RE: How ODU moved to C-USA and JMU didn't
As facts become more known, we all need to take note, just like the administration's spin on the failed play-off bids in 2004 and 2011, the truth is very different from what JMU tells us:

- many have questioned the CUSA olive branch to JMU and the role of ODU - it is becoming more clear

- did jmu have the same dialogue with George Mason and VCU as did ODU - if so why did JMU's administration tell us the CAA would stay together while ODU realized they needed to explore options

- increased student fees?

RE: How ODU moved to C-USA and JMU didn't
What don't you guys get? ODU's interest in seeking 1A was at the Presidents direction. He said do your homework and it has to work without an increase in student fees.

Our President said, "never on my watch"! If your President won't allow a move, there will be no move. Alger came on board at the time all of this was transpiring. Therefore, nothing was going to happen.

It is a new dawn, a new day. Our current administration has set wheels in motion. They have employed Carr Associates to explore all of the implications/ramifications of a move to 1A. Stop dwelling on the Rose years. They are over. Look forward with anticipation to the results of the Carr Report. Try just a little patience. If the decision is to remain 1AA, then by all means rant til the cows come home. All the chronic bashing of what happened in the past does no good.

Yeah this worries me. Did they not realize VCU or GMU were about to leave the CAA at that point?

The article states that ODU was aware ahead of time that VCU and GMU were moving from the CAA. According to the article they were informed at the final four. I love the article because it gives details and a time line and gives some financial break down as well. ODU met with at least six conferences and flew them into Norfolk. Words like "top tier" are used to described their move. I have to give them credit for making the move. I know we could do it, but our admin does not (at least that's my fear). This quote from ODU's president could be damning for our admin I think, ". . .if you're not making a decision, it should be hard, because if it's not, you're not weighing all of the factors on both sides."

Maybe they are finally weighing all factors, but $ says they don't have the confidence in us or our school to move up. Hope I am wrong.

According to the article Hattiesburg and Bowling Green are the 167 and 182 TV markets respectively. Where would Rockingham Co./Shenandoah Valley/Harrisonburg rank? How would they figure our market anyway; would it be Harrisonburg only?

Sent a link to the article to JB and the President (even though I am sure they already are aware of it). This came back from Alger.

President Alger will be traveling from Wednesday, June 19 through Sunday, July 7. Please contact the President's office at 540-568-6868 or burchde@jmu.edu if needed for assistance.

No presser of any great magnitude this week. . . 03-banghead
