Another Vance McDonald story from the Bay Area
There has seemed to be quite a few of these types of articles over the past couple of weeks.

I really like his grandma...
Quote:Initially, McDonald seemed to believe Ditka played for the 49ers. As a player, Ditka enjoyed his best seasons with the Chicago Bears before finishing his career with the Dallas Cowboys. Ditka later became head coach of the Chicago Bears, and 49ers coach Jim Harbaugh played for him.
Now, McDonald has a better understanding of the history.
"My grandma actually mailed me an article about Mike Ditka in the mail," said McDonald, who grew up in Winnie, Texas, a small town 60 miles east of Houston, near the Gulf of Mexico.
"And she even wrote me a little card and said, 'Read this, so you don't sound like a fool in the media again.'"

Ditka was drafted by both the Chicago Bears and Houston Oilers in 1961.
He played for the Bears, Eagles, and Cowboys.

Yes! And I also the way Vance was apparently impressed by the gravity (or novelty?) of receiving a paper document by postal mail.
Good story all around.

Sorry for the late addition to the thread, but I have been out of town. George, on Saturday, I was in North Carolina for a wedding. Near where the reception was being held, there was a guitarist doing a one-man show. The only song I heard as I was walking by was part of "The Letter," the old late-60's tune by the Box Tops, later covered by Joe Cocker. The last thing I heard as I was walking out of earshot was the conclusion of the song, followed by the guy saying, "for all the confused young people out there, a letter is a means by which people used to communicate..."
