ODU's Future To Pitch or QB, that is the question
Tom Robinson is a longtime sports columnist for The Virginian-Pilot. A former minor-league baseball player, he writes and blogs about local and national sports topics
To P or QB, that is the question
...... sign with the New York Yankees, who drafted him as a pitcher. That’s a good deal for the Monarchs, although it’s debatable how hard head coach Bobby Wilder really had to lobby to keep McCarley out of pinstripes.
This, however, does raise the potential for a future tug-of-war between Wilder and baseball coach Chris Finwood for McCarley’s spring-time attentions, considering the young man reportedly can run it up there at 91 mph from the mound. Could Finwood stomach the thought of that kind of talent walking around on his campus out of uniform, so to speak? Would Wilder even entertain for a minute the idea of sharing Taylor Heinicke's presumed successor in the selfless spirit of Cerulean brotherhood?
Stay tuned on that one, fans.

As cool as that would be I hope he picks 1. You hear about torn rotator cuffs, tommy johns, etc all to often with pitchers.

I say he elects to pitch after this year. Pitchers are a different type. With both verlanders coming out of here. I'm sure hell step down. Not good but basebell is just different and different types of people.

But he's had more success at football, so it's possible he's actually a "football guy" that played baseball in the spring for something to do.
Be interesting if he plays both--can he redshirt in football and play baseball?

RE: ODU's Future To Pitch or QB, that is the question
If he's that good at FB I'm surprised that he doesn't take some cash and give baseball a shot for a couple years. if it doesn't work out, then he can always come back to school and play FB if he wants to. He won't be the first kid to ever do that. I suppose that depends on how good of a FB prospect he is...
