I understand the need to get more buyers for the BTN, but competitively, this is going to be a problem. Maryland will compete in basketball and other non-revenue sports, but football will be down for a while. I think Rutgers will be more competitive in football, but not consistently. Basketball will be atrocious. It's quite possible that neither team will get to bowl eligibility in the next 5 years, especially once the B1G goes to a 9 game schedule.

Rutgers fb is light years ahead of Maryland fb, and if I had to predict, I would say that Rutgers will get to a bowl during its first year in the B1G.

I don't see it. Their 2014 schedule:

at Washington State
HOWARD
PENN STATE
at Navy
TULANE
MICHIGAN
at Ohio State
at Nebraska
WISCONSIN
INDIANA
at Michigan State
at Maryland

The games against Wash St and Maryland will decide bowl eligibility. I just don't see them beating any of the other B1G teams (outside of Indiana) yet.

HOWARD WIN
PENN STATE
at Navy WIN
TULANE WIN
MICHIGAN
at Ohio State
at Nebraska
WISCONSIN
INDIANA WIN

Not so fast, Bro. Washington St was 3-9 last year, but this is year #2 under Mike Leach. They will be vastly-improved, and the game is at their place, too!

As of July 1, MD begins to receive B1G $
http://www.bigten.org/genrel/120512aaa.html

Quote:The University of Maryland and Rutgers University have accepted invitations to join the Committee on Institutional Cooperation effective July 1, 2013.

Following the Big Ten Council of Presidents/Chancellors approval of Maryland and Rutgers’ applications to join the athletic conference, the matter of CIC membership was referred to CIC Provosts for action. The Provosts, who govern the CIC, voted unanimously to invite the University of Maryland-College Park and Rutgers University to join the consortium.

The addition of the University of Maryland and Rutgers University will increase CIC membership to 15 institutions, which includes the Big Ten Conference institutions and the University of Chicago. All CIC universities share a very strong research emphasis. Together CIC universities engage in $8.4 billion in funded research each year—the addition of these two universities will push that to $9.3 billion, and will add another 8 million library volumes and over 5,600 more full-time faculty to the collective resources of the consortium. In addition, these new colleagues bring leading-edge collaborative research projects in areas as diverse as biotechnology, transportation, cyber-security, and food safety research.

CIC Chair and Michigan State University Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs, Kim A. Wilcox said, "We welcome Rutgers University and the University of Maryland, two top-tier public research institutions that share the academic values, aspirations and challenges of the CIC member universities."

Said CIC Executive Director Barbara McFadden Allen, “We are excited about building a bigger, more vibrant collaborative with a larger national footprint.”

About the CIC: The CIC is the nation's premier higher education consortium of top-tier research institutions, including the Big Ten Conference members and the University of Chicago. Through collaboration CIC members save money, share assets, and increase teaching, learning and research opportunities. Founded in 1958, CIC members engage in voluntary, sustained partnerships such as library collections and access collaborations; technology collaborations to build capacity at reduced costs; purchasing and licensing collaborations through economies of scale; leadership and development programs for faculty and staff; programs that allow students to take courses at other institutions

I don't see Rutgers winning a game after flying across the country. They are not used to that.

Y'all don't give Maryland enough credit. They have won more ACC titles the past 30 years than all the NC schools combined.

They would have been bowling last season had they not lost their entire depth chart at QB to injuries. For the Tarhole fans you beat a Maryland team with a reserve linebacker starting at QB by a touchdown. There were far more closer losses they suffered. Had C.J. Brown started the entire season those would have been wins, and Maryland would have been a bowl team.

As long as Edsall is the coach they will not get any credit.

Second, if Maryland can't compete consistently in the ACC, what's makes you think they will do that in the B1G.

That Edsall coached team lost to your powerhouse program by a TD last year with a 4th string LB playing QB ( Petty is a 3rd string LB this year)

Again, they have won more ACC titles the past 30 years than your program.......most of those were before the divisional split so they beat UNC head to head. So that is "not competing consistently in the ACC yet we are supposed to believe that UNC is capable of being a top tier ACC program, even though you couldn't match what a team that didn't "compete consistently" in the ACC.

There is a reason why UNC has never been a rival to Clemson in football and Maryland was up until the Duffner years.

True. When Ross was the coach at Maryland, the Clemson v. Maryland games were classic.

Point #1..UNC is 37-32-1 against Maryland

Point #2. So what if they barely beat them last year. Florida beat Louisiana Lafayette with a TD in the final seconds. Notre Dame had to go to triple OT to beat Pitt at home. You get what I'm saying? Even good teams lay an egg. So don't give me this, "well you barely beat...." That happens all the time. Or maybe you can go into the OB favored to win and get beat by 37 points. Or roll into Raleigh at 9-1 and lose by 24 to NC State. Or maybe you forgot the last time you played in Chapel Hill you lost.

After Mack Brown left, we fell on hard time for a decade. We thought hiring Butch Davis was going to cure all of that, but he couldn't keep his program clean so the sanctions hit. Now Fedora appears ready to take the next leap. UNC has way more upside, but it all comes down to coaching.

Everyone knows Maryland has been highly inconsistent and now they are going to go play stiffer competition
