ODU or Yankees? ODU.
http://hamptonroads.com/2013/06/texas-qb...u-football
Maybe I'm just too new to all the recruiting stuff but that's pretty cool. Maybe it happens often? Especially with some of the CUSA schools and the conferences baseball pedigree. But what a great testament to the kids character... I'd be looking that one in the face a long time... Yankees contract? Tough choice.

Very cool story. I'm excited about his future at ODU.

It's great trivia but it really isn't that tough of a choice. Being drafted that late, the Yankees would be giving him maybe a couple thousand dollars (if any at all) as a signing bonus, paying him peanuts in rookie ball and offering him no guarantees of a future. At ODU, he will get an education, compete at the FBS level and maybe play his way into the NFL or CFL.
Edit: Not trying to be a party pooper. I'm happy we get any recruits, let alone one of his caliber. But I found the pay scale (monthly basis) for minor leaguers (this doesn't account for the early round draft picks who have signed big contracts). As you can see, he isn't bypassing a road of gold for ODU.
Level 1st Year 2nd Year 3rd Year
Rookie $1150 $1200 $1250
S/S A $1150 $1200 $1250
Low A $1300 $1350 $1400
High A $1500 $1550 $1600
Double A $1700 $1800 $1900
Triple A $2150 $2400 $2700

Yeah, basically if you're a first rounder out of high school you go pro. Another early round and you may have a decision. Anything after the first few rounds is really a no brainer: you go to school.

Oh wow, wasn't aware they got paid that little. I'm not a big baseball guy. I play but don't give a squat to watch it. So yeah... in light of that information that's a no brainer.

Yeah, this is why it's so puzzling to me that Ben Verlander went pro when drafted in the 14th round. He had the chance to come back and improve his draft stock (and worth) by a wide margin. One year as a fielder/hitter and he shoots up the draft board. Another year, and he's probably in the first 10 rounds, landing him a much more secure contract (10th rounders in 2012 got a $125k signing bonus).

Out of HS anything in the 1st 10 rounds is a decision. Marshall pitcher Aaron Blair who was just taken 36th overall was taken by the Marlins in the 18th round out of HS. He choose to come to Marshall mature and up his draft status.

Good for ODU....BUT - 33rd round? He'll have better facilities and eat much better at the ODU weight room and training table than he will with the Yankees in that low of a round.

I'm just glad he didn't start playing HS bball until his Sr. year. With a fastball clocked in the low 90's he could have been drafted much higher with another year under his belt.

Nice to see.
Incoming 49er RHP Ryan Butler was drafted by the Yankees in the 16th Round and will come to school instead of signing. Played for Marshall his Freshman year.

Yeah, as others have said, rounds 1-5 most take the money, 5-10 there is a decision to be made, after the 10th some still sign, but IMO they'd be smart to go to college. Especially now with the new limits on signing bonuses after the 10th.
I seen how fast an 18 year old kid can burn threw 300k. Saw it a kid right out of HS signed with the Indians and play for the single A Kinston Indians. He spent most of it in few months, late in the season got hurt, badly broken leg, never was the same. Today I think he's a truck driver.

I think it may have more to do with his brother and the relationship he has with Detroit. The fact that Justin signed a $220 million Dollar deal, had to have some influence on this decision.
However a signing bonus can have many variables because of factors the management sees as a benefit to them.
.
The other night Ben hit a home run for the Detroit minor league team located in Connecticut

Here is a story of John Curtice http://hamptonroads.com/2013/06/1stround...-walk-away
A shame my autographed baseball with Cuddyer and Curtice from spring of 97 is devalued.

Oh, there are countless stories like his, sad really. They really need just a few more years for their bodies to fully mature, but many see $$$$ signs, just used up early in the minors and have their young careers end before they really get started.

HR is not known for its football recruiting but baseball that's another story. We have some greats coming out of here. Youth league had david wright both uptons and zimmerman in it. All great players.

I try not to dispute people on claims too often, but to say Hampton Roads is not known for it's football recruiting is akin to saying the Atlantic Ocean is not known for it's water. LOL

I graduated a year after Mike and John when they got drafted. They were both in my math class. Played basketball with John for a while and surprised I haven't seen him at the softball fields. Good guy just unlucky how his arm turned out. But he went 110 percent in everything he played and hope he can get back into coaching or tutoring young pitchers.

I'd say this area puts out a fair amount of athletes in general.
I need some cases for my son's autographed balls from cudyer and the uptons. That was the coolest baby shower gifts of all. Diapers? Psh..
