Big East New Year's Eve Marathon
Being reported (again, don't know how to link because I'm on my Droid) that Fox Sports 1 will have a New Year's Eve marathon...
St John's vs Xavier.
Seton Hall vs Providence.
DePaul vs Georgetown.
Villanova vs Butler.
Marquette vs Creighton.

Also, the Friars open their non-conference schedule at home vs Boston College. Big game to kick off season.

RE: Big East New Year's Eve Marathon
assuming this is the conference opener, a few things-
1- got 20 slots for conference games. Sets up to allow 1-2 OOC games to be played in Jan/Feb
2- all 3 newbies get home conference openers on NYE. Not sure how smart that will be with all the students off campus for the holidays.

First game in the Big East is a good draw for these schools so that should offset the students who have gone home.

Remember, the Big East schools get most of their support from non-students. Local alumni and metro area non-alum fans make up a significant chunk of attendance, unlike a majority of other college hoop fanbases. Can u imagine how loud it's gonna be at Creighton, at home, 18,000 fans, vs Marquette, tipping off 3 hours before midnight...?!!!

Don't worry about Creighton, students or not, Centurylink Center will have over 18,500 fans for this game guaranteed.

RE: Big East New Year's Eve Marathon
This seems like a dumb move...

I know the Big East isn't a football conference anymore, BUT with college football's new bowl / playoff system putting all the six major bowls back on New Year's Eve Day/Night and New Year's Day/Night -- doesn't seem like the sports audience will be there for college basketball...

I'm not sure that's a great day/night to kick-off the conference slate... unless they have no choice and Fox is just throwing whatever it has out there to compete with ESPN. I just think come evening most casual fan types will be at parties anyway with no chance of picking up big tv numbers unless weather is bad in the Northeast and they stay in and officials hope they don't watch NYE festivities.

There is no playoff this year and thats all we're doing. I doubt they do it going forward. Going up against the Chic-fil-a bowl isn't that crazy of an idea.

RE: Big East New Year's Eve Marathon
think RedMan is right for the most part here. I do think going up against Chick-fil-a is a bit tougher than he gives credit for- but a much bigger blowout is going up against say the Liberty or Sun Bowls in the afternoon.

I think a lot of how good that day goes will hinge on how the OOC schedule has gone, especially for Butler and Creighton. The 2 night games could be going up against if it was like last year a top 10-15 game in the Chick-fil-a bowl. That's not easy, especially if Butler/Villanova have started slowly and 1/both are unranked.

For the 20 slots for conference games, each school would probably have 1 weekend bye and 1 weekday bye during the season, so while OOC games are possible, schools may not to choose to schedule games in those slots. This is how the Big Ten has done it with 18 conference games, as they have traditionally had a New Year's Eve start date for the conference schedule, too.

That's right... I got ahead of myself because it's New Years 2014... but the '14 playoffs aren't until AFTER the '14 season in '15 basically...

All 3 of those games have marquee teams, but those are some awful matchups. 03-yawn

RE: Big East New Year's Eve Marathon
Let's tip our hats to our league and Fox Sports for coming up with our 5-game, opening day marathon on NY Eve... really a brilliant, creative move. Yesterday I picked out my seats at the Dunk for this year, and already can't wait for The Hall on Dec 31st.

The Big East matchups, outside of Marquette/Creighton and maybe St John's/Xavier- aren't exactly good either.

Our games have interesting storylines at least. Three teams are hosting Big East games for the first time in their schools' history, including one at Hinkle Fieldhouse, the Fenway Park of college basketball. The other two include the Hoyas' home opener and a Friar team that was playing great ball last March... so all five games have some great storylines...
