Looking at this from a purely business standpoint (and let's be real... college football is just a business), what benefit is there for Alabama to play Troy? There's only benefit on Troy's side, and while not a top competitor, it's still a competitor.

While I can understand the frustration of the Troy fans, I don't understand the outrage.

Good point let us look at it from a business point of view. Let's say FAU takes 200 people to Tuscaloosa. (That's probably a bit high) 200 x 55 = $11,000. Troy would probably take 5000 ( A conservative number) 5000 x 55 = $275,000. Let's assume each fan spends $10 at the concession stand. That is $50,000 compared to $2000. That is $312,000 more assuming you are paying Troy the same amount as FAU. From a business stand point it is a no brainer.

I would throw this out there, in addition to what Hemi stated, 5000 is very conservative. This would be like a bowl game, simply because it's never been done. We've traveled well to the N O Bowl...to the GoDaddy...we'd show up for either game...if they drafted it, I'd vote for it.

The Georgia game isn't going anywhere for Georgia Southern, it's better for UGA in that the game up until this point has not counted toward bowl eligibility. Now it will. This is obviously a local interest game, but one which UGA seems to find an interest aka "Little Brother". The Tech game could have been earlier, but Southern backed out on Tech & UGA in the same year. Tech has an obvious attendance issue in case no one has noticed ! The Georgia Southern game will fill up Bobby Dodd, and that's what GT wants/needs, a full house.
Unless the SEC moves to a nine game conference schedule which was voted down 13-1(Sabin) by the coaches I see the big boys continuing to schedule a cupcake. Insofar as UGA is concerned, being that college football in the State of Georgia was born between UGA and Mercer (01/30/1892), the Bears will find themselves on the Dawgs schedule sooner than later. Tech's first game was also against MU(11/5/1892). I look for the Macon university to make the Jackets schedules as well.
The one oddball in the instate play in Georgia is Georgia State vs. UGA & Tech, not to pick an argument, but a little bird tells me that UGA is turning a blind eye to the Atlanta GA upstart. Now I can see GT vs State, like I said about Tech attendance. Of course the joke there is when you call the Tech ticket office to inquire about the GT vs. GSt kickoff time, the response being " what time can you be here" 02-13-banana

They may keep the current games just because you're in transition, but after a couple of years you can forget about GT or UGA scheduling you again.

Only problem is... Alabama isn't hurting (at least I don't believe they are) to sell out the stadium.

They could pretty much play Our lady of the urinal and still sell out.

So from a business standpoint, there's no benefit to playing Troy.

Sadly, I'm not shocked. And I voiced outrage to my politicians about trying to legislate college football games.

GT vs. Georgia State would sell out BDS and would be the only game that we could actually schedule that would break 50k in the Dome. The reasons have been discussed to death. It would be the biggest local intterest game in Atlanta not called GA/GT. But it presents an issue in legitimizing and giving press to an in state school. Georgia has even less interest in us. This is about alumni and fans not wanting to deal with you at work. They already have to deal with all of you SBC/CUSA/SoCon puny people talking about playing an alphabet soup of schools. The last thing they want to talk about is you playing them. In Georgia State's case we are a national reseatch university graduating a whole bunch of MBAs and Law Student they have to sit next to. The stupid BOR let State have its own university and then put it at the same research university status as Tech and Gawga. That was annoying enough. Now you DARE start football and move to FBS?! I don't want to even acknowledge your existence because I might have to question my SEC/B12/ACC fandom, especially since pssst, I attended one of those alphabet soup directional schools.

That's the big secret. What if the sidewalk fans that went to USA or Texas State 30 years ago bought a SBC school cap instead of an SEC or B12 one...

Yes we are all mere bumps, but too many bumps will trash your alignment and shocks.
