Tier 3 Rights - Is Your School Losing $$$
Third-tier rights are basically those owned by the school -- or a marketer like IMG -- usually highlighted by a collection of non-conference football and basketball games. Example: ESPN had to buy those rights individually from each SEC school in order to launch the SEC Network.

Does the Sun Belt media deal leave these third-tier rights on the table? Could your school make additional money by selling these rights, or have they already?

I doubt we have given up our third tier rights. Let me rephrase that. I doubt anyone is currently interested in SBC third tier rights.

WKU's third tier rights have been with FCS Atlantic fr several years. included all mbb games and most wbb that were not picked up by espn or sbc rights. these rights were sold to espn3 this past season. with the move to cusa, i see them going back to fox, especially with fox launching fs1 and 2.

Did the Hilltoppers have to sell their tier 3 rights to ESPN?
Was it a CUSA agreement with ESPN?

We sell the package every year for the revenue. it is our property. Since we broadcast locally on our pbs station, we do all of the production. Simulcast it to TV and Radio. The Network haas zero cost beyond what we are paid. Students get Credit. Pay a few professors and professionals. Cha Ching!

Sounds logical. Just thought that CUSA might have made you do that, but guess that wouldn't jive because it's next year when you go there.

I guess espn just bid more. Not sure. CUSA has very little media on espn network. Most everything is on FS and CBS. With FS1 and FS2, i see it going more to Fox. They need some serious programing.

Any idea if your Tier 3 rights are owned by IMG? We have a contract with them too and I'm sure our contracts are structured similarly.

Not positive, but do not believe that they are. Think both of us are missing out on some opportunities.
