This is an update to the original IGN article that broke this news:
Update: EA Sports vice president Andrew Wilson has released the following statement on EA's official site:
"By now, most fans will have heard that EA's licensing agreement with the NCAA is set to expire and that we have agreed to part ways. I'm sure gamers are wondering what this means.
This is simple: EA Sports will continue to develop and publish college football games, but we will no longer include the NCAA names and marks. Our relationship with the Collegiate Licensing Company is strong and we are already working on a new game for next generation consoles which will launch next year and feature the college teams, leagues and all the innovation fans expect from EA Sports.
We took big creative strides with this year's college game and you’ll see much more in the future. We love college football and look forward to making more games for our fans."

There are a number of universities that are clients of the Collegiate Licensing Company (including JMU), but not every college uses them. This begs the question if only those schools that are clients of the CLC will be included in the game.

This thread inspired me to bust out NCAA 09 last night and it is terrible. Madden06 has better in game game play...just awful. EA should be ashamed of themselves.

I hope this opens up some competition. Would love to see another company try to make a college football game.

I think there is one other major company that handles most of the rest. I can't remember it off the top of my head. Hopefully EA would reach out to them as well. Are the bowls governed by the NCAA? Those might have to change.
But I was thinking about this: The NCAA pulled out presumably because of the lawsuit by athletes saying their likeness was being used. Doesn't this now just open the individual universities up to the same liability? Maybe somebody with better understanding of the LOI/Scholarship language can help: is there language in those agreements that allows the university to use the player's likeness for profit?

Hot off the press!
http://www.ign.com/articles/2013/07/19/e...e=facebook
To summarize, as many had predicted on this thread, EA has signed a 3 year deal with the Collegiate Licensing Company. The vast majority of FBS level teams, JMU included, are affiliated with CLC. This allows them to still legally depict the colleges in the game.

I'm surprised that people are hating on the NCAA game. They have to cover over 100 teams. That takes a ton of research on the part of EA and I love the simplicity of the game. I think they do a great job. Madden would be cool if I was unemployed and lived in my parents' basement and had all day to figure it out but for somebody who lives a normal life and doesn't have time to engage in a Madden cult, the NCAA game works a lot better. Plus, I find it a lot of fun to start a season with a middle-of-the-pack team and try to see how you do.

RE: Semi OT: NCAA Football '14
I was away for the last week, but to add to the discussion:
It is correct that the lawsuit burden could now shift to the individual schools, and not all of them are comfortable with it. So just because a school is a CLC team, that does not mean they automatically give permission to allow their school to be represented.
http://www.usatoday.com/story/sports/nca...s/2525843/
Quote:However, University of Kansas athletics department spokesman Jim Marchiony -- who identified his school as a CLC client -- said KU officials will want to digest the NCAA's decision. Marchiony said Kansas' agreement with EA, via CLC, for the current version of NCAA Football expires June 30, 2014.
"I'm not surprised CLC and EA Sports have a Plan B and we're looking forward to hearing from them about it, to see how we'll proceed in the future," Marchiony said. "We will certainly talk about it, where we go from here."
Stanford deputy athletics director Patrick Dunkley, who said his school also is with CLC, expressed similar sentiments. He said that prior to the NCAA's announcement Wednesday, the issue "was not on our radar."
Now, "given that the NCAA is taking the position that the legal risk outweighs the benefit, it's only prudent for us to analyze what the perceived risks are," Dunkley said.
Also, players continue to join the lawsuits:

This sounds like devastating news for the ea cfb games. The sec and its schools will not be featured in future games. Individual schools are welcome to license themselves independently if they so choose.
That is rough news for EA...I imagine it would cost them a pretty penny to license all these schools individually. I can see EA not even continuing to make a CFB game within 5 years time.

That article has since been updated to add that the Big Ten and Pac-12 will also not allow their conferences to be featured.

I wouldn't be surprised if they're hoping a holdout will make ea pay up big time for the rights. $ is the likely cause as always.
