Seriously though, I don't know what your profession is, but I'm pretty sure that the concept of compromise isn't limited to schools and state jobs. It can come in handy for maintaining long-term relationships, too.

I work for a company that has cash (not a bank). The cash is invested in young corps & ideas that will likely (we hope) be sold for more cash in 3-5 yrs. We model cash flow and measure results vs. projections (excel geeks). We know if we win or lose based on actual cash flow b/c discounting cash flow is how we determine what to pay now...probably TMI. If we win, bonuses all around, if we lose, fired. We all know the rules so it works...

Who makes the decisions on which companies to invest in and how much to invest? Is it just one person?

The well compensated president takes 100% responsibility for results. This is the reason the non-presidents, the rest of us are held strictly accountable i.e. the president knows that if he (a man in this case) does not clear dead wood it will probably, in short order cost him his job. How long many years we have on the job or if we are nice people are not variables in the continued employment equation.

Should all business be operated this way, absolutely not. The other extreme is no accountability and the longer a person is dead wood to the organization the more likely they ride it out to retirement, the norm for a state government.

You're right 98% of the time, compromise is a must but in some cases compromise is a disguise for lack of positive result. President Alger is walking a tight line with faculty and sports and maybe time will tell that he nailed it. What he can't do is piss off alum and faculty. If Alger is forced to choose, we all know he has to go with faculty, it's a school and CUSA/MAC/SB are not BCS.

Time does not appear to be on his side as far as conference realign goes but that is way he makes the big bucks, big decisions.

Can anyone tell us what this article is saying because the teaser makes it seem that the admin actually KNOWS that a move to I-A would spark more giving... that can't possibly be right! [/sarcasm]
