UNC fans, why are we so far down the list...seems pretty consistent from all of you? Assume Wake fan here has us last from the Orange Bowl. VTech and Pitt fans thanks for the kind words about our program. I suspect Virginia will jump up to 7/8 within a few years, rivalries always amp up the interest.

Looking forward to ACC 2014!

1. No history. L'ville is like the latest fad. We'll have to see if it can be sustained.

2. There are too many other teams in the league that provide UNC a more attractive match up at the moment. You can't beat FSU/Miami..or Clemson/GT/VT. UNC has historic rivalries with NCSU, Duke, Wake, UVA. Notre Dame is Notre Dame.

If L'ville can maintain a high level of performance, they'll jump up the list.

That's pretty much how I feel about UNC. Not enough history. That's why I put NCState so much higher on my list. We used to have some great games with the Wolfpack back in the 70's. Not enough history with UNC, Duke and Wake.....yet. I figure after we spank that a$$ a few times you folks in Carolina will start hating us.

As far as history goes for most Louisville fans, we would rather play Cincinnati every year than Wake. I'm sure they probably feel the same.

Just thought it was worthy of mention that a GT fan has more interest in FSU than UNC and significantly moreso than UVA or Duke given some of the conversations that have taken place and the declarations that were made by non-GT fans. (Not a large sample-size, though, but corroborates with Teel's article.)

I'm not. Notre Dame and Louisville have had some tremendous basketball, baseball and olympic sport rivalries since Louisville joined The Big East in 2005 - 2006. Notre Dame has won 76 Big East Championships in that time. Louisville is the only program close to them at 58. (The next closest one is at 41.)

It only makes sense that given the opportunity that the budding rivalry would continue on the grid iron.

Unfortunately, with the way the rotating schedules work, we will play once every 6 years. That's not a recipe to build hate.

Basketball on the other hand.......

Virginia Tech
Notre Dame

Duke
UNC

Note: my list is based on a combination of history, school commonality, and geography (both closeness to the school itself, and closeness to my own location for ease of tailgating), with unequal weight being given to each. In other words, BC ranks higher than Georgia Tech because it's closer to the University; Miami ranks higher than Florida State because we've played them more; and Duke ranks higher than UNC because the former is a fellow private school.

Obviously, a particular school having a high ranking in a given year might vault them up the list on a temporary basis, but this would be my "all things being equal" long-term list. I'm generally not in favor of making lists like these based solely on ranking mutable "brand names," recent results, short-term success, or only very recent history with each other (another reason I loathe fellow Syracuse fan's proposing L'ville as our permanent basketball rival instead of BC or Pitt).

I agree that BC and Pitt are our primary rivals, Duke and UNC will be our secondary rivals. UL is (obviously) very good, but will never be anything more than just a game of substantially heightened interest, no different than if Miami, Wake, NCSU, FSU, or GT got/stayed good.

Even ion football, I think that our primary rivals are BC and Pitt with Miami and ND as our secondary (and one-way) rivals. Virginia Tech, FSU, and Clemson will be games of extremely heightened interest.

My list is:
1. BC - A lot of history and the two schools are similar in almost every way.
2. Pitt - A lot of history and similar football profiles. Both schools have long and proud traditions.
3. Miami - A private school with an excellent football tradition (since 1980) and nostalgia from Miami v. Syracuse games of the 90's.
4. ND - The single most storied team in college football.
5. VT - A strong team with a legendary coach with 90's BIG EAST nostalgia to boot!
6. FSU - FSU seems to be within grasping distance of a national championship every year. A chance to hold out own against on of the nation's best is exciting.
7. GT - Excellent academics and an excellent football tradition. Someone called it the southern Pitt, and I think that they were right.
8. Clemson - Clemson is undeniably a solid team and has one of the most exciting traditions in the NCAA.
9. UNC - UNC has a tremendous amount of potential. Historically UNC has been hampered by a basketball emphasis, 3 other BCS teams in the state, and the University of Tennessee within throwing distance. However, with a renewed interest in football and a weak Tennessee, UNC might just realize its potential.
10. UVA - UVA has excellent academics and is almost the epitome of ACC football. It is another ACC school that has a tremendous amount of potential.
11. UL - UL is coming off a Sugar Bowl victory over #3 FSU and has one of the most exciting athletic programs in the ACC.
12. NCSU - After our basketball game @ NCSU two years ago, NCSU fans seem pretty upset with Syracuse. If nothing else, that should make the games really, really entertaining.
13. Duke - Duke is a private school with excellent academics and a basketball rival waiting to happen.
14. Wake - WF football has been extremely competitive as of late, and the idea of two private schools going at it in competitive DI is extremely intriguing.

RE: ACC Football - Ranking by Interest Level
The top 5 is easy to pick and the order wasn't too difficult either. These 5 wouldn't change much on a year-to-year basis no matter how their or FSU's season is going.
1. Miami
2. Notre Dame
3. Clemson
4. Virginia Tech
5. Georgia Tech

This is entirely dependent on them maintaining a high level of play (8-4/9-3 most years after joining the ACC) otherwise they'll fall back to the rest of the bunch.
6. Louisville

After this point it's not nearly as clear. There are a lot of factors that would go into where these teams would fall but the biggest is the opponent's record and the division title implications. This list could literally flip in one year's time.
7. NC State
8. North Carolina
9. Syracuse
10. Pittsburgh
11. Wake Forest
12. Boston College
13. Virginia

And this one will likely always be at the bottom.
14. Duke

Figured ND would care more about past history, institutional fit, etc. I'm not aware of (m)any ND vs UL games. If UL was having a mediocre year would they still be #4 on your list?

Correct. ND and Louisville have a pretty good rivalry going in a number of other sports.

Plus Charlie Strong is a former ND assistant and a great coach, in my opinion.

I think that he will have Louisville football at a high level for some time.

There may be some very good games in this series.

Interesting comment. So what would happen if you added all of the former ACC and Big East members to the current list of 14 ACC teams plus Notre Dame.
When you add teams like Maryland and UConn, would the order change considerably?
Would Rutgers make a difference, South Carolina, Maryland? We have already seen that Cincinnati would make a difference with CJ.04-cheers

Well, this is my personal list. I can't speak for other ND fans.

The only other ACC teams that ND has some history with other than Florida State and Miami are BC and Georgia Tech.

I personally place interest in Louisville over those two.

The rest of the ACC is interchangeable to me, interest wise (no real history to distinguish NC, NC State, Duke, Wake, Clemson, Virginia and Virginia Tech).

Although ND has never played Louisville, I like the overall athletic success of the Cardinals (which I think will only improve further in the ACC).

It is also geographically close to ND and has a large Catholic population. ND likes to recruit there once in a while (Paul Hornung, Tony Driver).

This is pretty much based on our history with schools. The top 6 we have played regularly or have memorable games with ( I'm old enough to remember Pitt - FSU in the early 80s). I work with a bunch of GT alums and BC is a traditional rival. The rest I barely know you but a couple are in the Coastal so we will get acquainted. UVA and NCSt have had series recently with us.
