dog is getting put down
He is labeled an aggressive dog and he has bite 4 people including my 55 inch tv. Wife has been ready for a while. He has severe separation anxiety and is house protective.

I never thought I would be in this spot. He is a great dog but these mental issues can't be happy for him. He is scared when we r gone and he tries to protect us but sometimes the only thing he knows to do is bite ur but to kedp u from what scares him. Might be the hardest thing I have had to do. Going to take a long time to get my 12 year old over this. There is just no place that will take a dog with problems. Wish I could find a place for him to be happy. G

RE: dog is getting put down
We had a mentally ill cat that we had to put down, I was sad for a few days, but that was nothing compared to how I felt when we put our elderly dog down. Sorry for your loss, they really are family members. Tough on the kids, my daughter walked around with red eyes for a week.

We lost our 11 year old lab 4 years ago. We have done everything with our current dog from training to meds hut with his fear he could hurt my wife son or daughter when he thinks he is protecting. He is not mean just scared.

I really feel like I did something wrong. The dog started off with a rough life from day one and we tried to keep him happy. Divorce is not an option.

Try the Huron Valley humane Society. They have a large facility and a section for dogs that have psychological problems. They may be able to rehab it. Worth a call anyway. It's in the Ann arbor ypsi area so it's a bit of a drive but if they can help and find it a new home it'll be worth it imo .

You have my sympathy, Coach. Had to put our Golden down (Cancer) eight years ago and it still tugs at my heart strings.

RE: dog is getting put down
My condolences, Kimbo. Was in your position years ago when kids were little. Inherited my mothers dog when she had to go into a nursing home. After my son started walking, dog would be intimidated and attack (unprovoked). Unfortunately, ultimately had to put the dog down as no other family members would take it.

Major - your comment about the golden retriever is noted. Love those dogs. I have read that they are very susceptible to cancer, which keeps me from getting one. Rather not go through the pain you did. (I know DB has suffered through it too.)

Called they can't take dogs from out of their area. I hope we can come up with someone to take him.

I took on a rescue that is dog, mangy cute mutt (think "Lady and the Tramp" he's Tramp) aggressive for the same reasons as what you described, he's scared to death. Problem is, now we're convinced he's killed before, he's very capable and when a loose dog approaches him even when on a leash, I fear for their lives.

The gate accidentally got left open the a couple of months back, during a late season blizzard mind you, I heard a ton of commotion and I ran out in shorts, with no shoes on in the snow to pull him off of TWO DOGS, the owner was very understanding and knew the story, but I feel awful.

I'm going through the same struggle, he's awesome when he's not around other dogs, can't socialize him now he's so dangerous. I hate muzzling him and now he's starting to dig and escape so leaving him alone is getting dicey too.

Hands are tied, but we love our furry creatures, I'm going to try and solve this with more muzzling and socialization until he realizes. Though, if he's killed before it might be a losing battle.

RE: dog is getting put down
Our Border Collie (he's 14) can barely get up and down the stairs now without assistance. He won't be able to do it when winter comes. My wife wants to do it now, but that has more to do with her loathing the dog hair. I'm torn, and just keep stalling it. He still shows some spunk now and then and I just can't bring myself to do it until I'm sure he's miserable.

Yes they are - seizures too. Which ours always seemed to get in dead of night on weekends when he did.

Even so, I can't imagine a better breed of dog than Golden Retriever - beautiful, well-behaved yet fun, loving-loyal.

Toby was great dog and we miss him very much to this day - his ashes are in an urn on mantle in family room. So in a way he's still with us eight years later.

He was 11+ when we had to put him down. Couldn't stay in the room as he passed because I didn't want my memories of him to be of when he was "gone."

This is all going to be my wife. I love this dog but know she is doing the right thing. I really don't even want to know if she finds him a new home or has him put down. Anything i consider family i am extremely loyal and will die for. His frustration and scared biting could some day end up being our daughter and I couldn't live with that. This was supposed to happen last year so we gave him another happy year as best we could. He is a wreck when we r gone. I video taped him one time and he is nuts the whole time and that is no way to live.

Sending Whinny hugs to all of you.

It's so very sad. The worst part of having a pet is that you nearly always outlive them, whatever the reason for their passing.

Fearful, aggressive dogs feel miserable. They're torn between their biological need to protect, and wanting to please you. It must be an anxiety-ridden life for them. Sometimes the kindest thing is to set them free to head to The Rainbow Bridge on The Other Side. So you put your own pain and sadness aside, and give them that gift of freedom. If you truly love them, you will set them free.

Man, brutal.

I'm sorry, I'm giving this guy one last chance to get socialized and get over his fear of dogs or that's where we're headed as well, it's not fair to the normal pups to have to face him if he gets loose. It's a lethal mistake.
