Honestly, that sounds like a big enough deal to have been known by CUSA before the invite and/or the Sun Belt too.

It was common knowledge amongst most fans that FIU was in an APR mess. Thee truth is that FIU is reaping from a god awful decision in bringing Isaiah Thomas on board, which was made worse by leaving him at the school longer than he should have been.

When you do the search on that site for FIU, it shows 15 penalties not associated to MBB... so the blame is not all on IT and MBB... it is clearly a full Athletics Department problem.

What I think they mean is that FIU wouldn't be eligible for postseason play in ALL sports, couldn't host any postseason events for D-I sports, can't receive money from postseason events, wouldn't count as a D-I opponent on other schools' schedules (RPI purposes in basketball, bowl-counter opponent in football), etc.

Now, there may or may not be anything in C-USA's bylaws that gives them the opportunity to remove a member placed on this type of restriction, but even if there was I don't see C-USA exercising that option. Seems like a competent AD would be able to right the ship within a few years and booting a school you just invited to invite some other school from the same conference you plucked the school you just booted seems like a bunch of unneeded hassle.

========================

Hopefully this means Garcia is fired. Whatever good he's overseen at FIU he seems to have overseen a lot of fail, too.

Agree here Garcia should be out. It is a full department issue and can't be blamed on one program or coach.

Also, The idea that FIU wouldn't count as a DI or FBS opponent would essentially mean they are no longer DI. Can't be on a Conference schedule if the game doesn't count. No OOC will play them if it doesn't count as FBS.

Wow, this could really turn into a disastrous addition unless they get things worked out quick.

Reading comprehension, not just a problem for the FIU men's basketball team.

It was more the beauty of getting back into the Florida market for recruiting purposes. FAU was then added to give FIU a travel partner. Even if FAU were added first we would have added FIU in the second round of additions.

Could never figure out why FIU was invited in the first place? Their tent for a press box or their 20 fans for basketball?

CUSA obviously wanted to keep a presence in Florida for many reasons. Hopefully FIU will get it turned around.

and yet, still selected over WKU. Maybe the rest of CUSA didn't appreciate farm animals as much as western frats.

Last time I checked WKU was invited to CUSA....We can bring the farm animals to your football stadium so it looks like more than a 100 breathing living creatures attend your football and basketball games...

APR is a joke when you have teams like UNC cheating for 10 years. It sounds like FIU will get more punishment than UNC which doesn't make sense. So it pays for FIU to cheat.

..or the fact that they DO NOT send a radio guy to broadcast away basketball games.

CUSA didn't add an athletic program, they added a zip code.

Obviously you were selected first.

They had to get the market first and then a product good enough to show down there.

RE: FIU Could Be In A Lot of Trouble
I disagree, not with the premise but with the fact that I think BOTH UNC and FIU should be punished. It is embarrassing to have this low of an APR score in any sport. It shows a true lack of priorities in your athletic program and that falls squarely on the AD and the Head Coaches. Like Chiefsfan says, Isaiah was there 1 year too long. I just hope that the Pitino departure doesn't hurt us too bad for the next APR score. Go F I U!

I guess this is why the big push for jmu. If fiu goes down jmu can move in. Don't like that but it would make sense.

I'd love to see JMU get in, for the purely selfish reason that they'd be the closest C-USA school to me. Same for Delaware.

I'll never get the rationale behind adding both FIU and FAU. To me, FAU is and was light years ahead of FIU in terms of facilities and stature, and there's no way C-USA didn't know about this mess. Every other school that C-USA has added has made sense, but FIU is still a head scratcher to me.

Have any thoughts, or responses from incoming Coach Evans regarding academics in general, or this story specifically, been reported locally?
