I've been to Dallas/Fort Worth/Irving, Houston and Amarillo as part of my "Texas Travels" thus far, enjoyed every encounter. I'm confident that El Paso will not be an exception to the rule. Go for it if you can get it...

san antonio would also be a good host for it. But i was looking at Rice's baseball stadium and they only seat 5,368. They had the championships there. The new baseball stadium that El Paso is getting is gonna seat around 9,000. El Paso should easliy get atleast 6,000 for the tourny and what ever other fans come from other teams.. El Paso is also very close to Californa and arizona. It would get alum from the eastern schools to get a chance to see their school. Just something else to think about.

actually i dont think UTEP would get it, I was just thinking of it in my head.

Trustmark Park in Pearl hosted the tournament in back to years in 2011 and 2012. Given how people love college baseball in Mississippi, the tournament should have been an easy and successful venture. Pearl is near Jackson, and close to a good regional airport with service to nearly every town in CUSA. There are plenty of cheap, nice hotel rooms in Jackson, as well as things to do with the wife and kids. It should have been a home run. Yet, attendance for a Friday night game between Rice and Southern Miss only yielded 2600 in attendance. The tournament didn't lose money AFAIK, but it wasn't the runaway success it was expected to be either. I strongly believe that experience will lead to the conference preferring on-campus sites at schools with teams in the near future. I think this is a good strategy because CUSA is expanding from nine to twelve teams in baseball and will have some solid programs moving into the conference. It is an opportunity for many of the adds to make a quick impact in their new conference, so I expect to see some real enthusiasm these next few years as well as a successful bid to host from one of them. All of these factors are going to hurt El Paso's chances. The fact that Biloxi, Birmingham, and Charlotte also have or are getting new minor league parks themselves won't help.

No one in Jackson knew about it. They barely even advertised for it. I told people it was there those two years, and these were people who love baseball, and they were shocked because they hadn't heard and would have gone. That's why it failed.

This past summer, the answer went from a hard no to a possibly. Our AD has loftly goals such as building a restaurant in the south end of our football stadium. He also mentioned wanting to add more women's sports such as swimming, beach volleyball, and gymnastics. That lead to speculation that we are going to try and add women scholarships so that we could field a baseball team (again).
Well, a few drops of hope is better than nothing, I guess.

It wouldn't make any sense to host a conference baseball tournament unless UTEP adds a team of its own in the future. Every team would have to fly out there and it's pretty expensive to fly a baseball team. That's why a central location within busing distance for some of your teams at least is always the optimum first choice.

I would suggest the city try to host a college baseball tournament first in the early spring (the weather is good at that point I believe in El Paso). You'd probably have a good chance to get some northern teams looking for a warm weather site, and maybe 1 or 2 Texas teams to fill out the field.

In terms of size, 5000 is plenty to host a conference baseball tournament.

Harbor park will bid on cusa tourney. Its seats 14k and with the solid talent that is coming out of this area we stand a good chance of getting it. The scouts love our ball park. Odu stadium is to small to host.

With all the baseball that is played in Texas I've always wondered why UTEP, UNT, SMU and even Tulsa (yes, I know it's in OK) don't field baseball programs.

Trustmark Park in Pearl/Jackson is a great central location for the tourney. I wish they would leave it there!!

I don't think it should be there every year but I agree it's a great location and a great venue.

Alot of yall might think its a bad idea because El Paso wouldnt support it. But El Paso is a baseball town and the weather is perfect out here. IT might be a little hot but its okay.

Now that you mentioned it, the thought didn't cross my mind until now, I'd completely forgotten that UTEP doesn't have a baseball team yet with the advantages you just mentioned here, you'd think that a team would have been created by now...I'd often wondered about that, and the fact that as far as I know, UTEP has a hockey team, right?

north texas doesnt have a baseball team either. What if they wanted to host one? Tell you the truth i wouldnt be shocked if UTEP or the city of El Paso placed a bid for a baseball tourney.

I would. Ya'll aren't in the habit of hiring stupid people are you? Well, it would take a real dummy to go to the expense of trying to host a college baseball tournament and not even have a baseball team. That one would go from fax machine to trash can.

el paso hosted college football all star game and it drew well. a poster above just said a championship game drew like 2,000 fans. Without even trying i could see el paso drawing like at least 2k to 4k in the early round games and i could see more than 5k+ in championship game even without utep hosting a team. I think El paso should do it just to put the pressure on UTEP to put out a Baseball team. Thats why i was asking can a city place a bid even though UTEP doesnt have a team?

Well, yes, they can place a bid - that's been done before (the Jackson games pointed out) and unless the conference changed the rules in the last year or two there's nothing that would stop UTEP from putting in a bid. That said, the closest C-USA team to the tournament site was 100 miles - and that played heavily on the attendance. Take it for what it's worth, but a top 20 attendance team, that team actually in the tournament, the de-facto host of the tournament - within 100 miles - and the attendance was half of what was desired.

With that experience in the books I see a UTEP bid hitting the commissioners office and hitting the commissioners trash can within about 4 seconds of each other.

Tulane played 58 games this year, including the conference tournament.
So all in all, I guess you'd typically be looking at 25-30 home games a season.

Have to agree about this. I'm sure 10miners is referring to El Paso's new baseball stadium being built downtown hosting the baseball tournament, but since there is no UTEP baseball team I don't see why the baseball tournament should be here. I really don't think the city would want to bid for an event like this either unless it was for NCAA Tournament first round Men's Basketball games. El Paso is planning to build a new arena downtown too.

Let's just focus on El Paso hosting the C-USA Basketball Tournaments for now. :)

You can sure tell it is summertime with a thread like this. However, I wouldn't be surprised with what BB does at anytime. When you have a commissioner that openly encourages our schools to "seek better conference opportunities"...well, you get my drift..

I'd love this. I'd head down for the weekend.

Wouldn't be surprised to see the new ballpark in Uptown Charlotte put a bid in as well.

I'm sure they could host it successfully, but it would be an odd thing to do considering the good attendance and baseball interest at many C-USA school that play baseball.

It's not going to happen unless UTEP adds baseball... Out of curiosity, how much is the winning bid to host the conference baseball tournament?

There was an article in the local paper about UTEP bring baseball back. According to Bob Stull AD it would require UTEP to add at least two women's sports. That means that the University would have to make room in the budget for three sports.
