If the AD is promising those facilities then it is HIS JOB to raise the money for them.

I think Rip is a good coach and if given resources would have done fine. But he did not do fine here and he did fail at Memphis. So I agree with everyone really.
Why? His tenure’s failure was a mixture of his lack of experience as a head coach and his style with our limited resources. He didn’t realize how little help he would get from the fans and admin till too late. He is a smart guy who is detailed oriented with a strong work ethic. The lack of a competent stable staff led him to micro manage and lose control. And then he made mistakes too; every year he would come on the Radio and say “we are going to get there soon” or “we have a chance to be pretty good”.
Tough situation for a first time D1 coach.
For the record, I would have hired a DC and an OC and kept
I thought Rip was a great image on the sidelines and for the program. He was always very cordial to me and anyone that greeted him.
My problem was his style of play. And at that time we simply didn't have the horses to run the ball up the middle. His philosophy was to keep it close and see what happens in the 4th quarter. We had some damn good defenses back then, but very anemic offenses.
I can vividly remember sitting at a game against UC, a program that we should have been on par with, and in the first 3 series; we ran every conceivable type of play we could. Screen, medium, and long passes; middle, off tackle, sweep, and misdirection runs.....I believe that we had 0 first downs in those 3 series. The group I was with all agreed that we had no weapons to use on offense.
I think that you're 100% correct in your last 2 sentences, the lack of offensive weapons in many years led to his "keep it close, and let the defense or one sustained drive put us in position to win late" philosophy. (Just from a perspective stand point.....I think we had less than 100 yards total offense when we started our game winning drive against UT) It was frustrating to watch while losses continued to pile up. He was playing the hand that he had.....and I acknowledge that he was responsible for getting the offensive players to have a better hand.
It was truly frustrating to have the really good defenses that we had some years in that era and not be able to win more games.
Cincy = 4th and 27 forever.
Yeah, that was another frustrating experience that's forever imbedded in everyone's memory that was there. Bowl bid, winning season....all down the drain. It felt much like the ASU desperation pass or the Rice TD; only worse.
There is nothing worse than Cincinnati 4-27
NOTHING!

Classy. The reason Rip didn't get another head coaching job is that he was so turned off to the idea after his time dealing with our athletic department that he never really pursued a head coaching job again. He has had a VERY successful coaching career in the NCAA and the NFL. Anyone with an IQ higher than that of a used enema kit could see that.
