JMU football camp
Mickey just finished the Newport News camp today at CNU. About 150 kids were there and it can't hurt that coach Newsome is back on staff . His ties run deep on the Peninsula.
Our staff has a lot of name recognition, but they are freaking old. Let's hope the generation gap isn't a problem.

Not sure which members of the coaching staff were present to run the camp, but outside of the top 4 coaches, there are also 4 position coaches (2 in their 20s, 2 in their 30s). Age-wise it seems pretty balanced to me.

RE: JMU football camp
Mickey, O'Cain, Newsome, and Hanson have 240 years on this earth. I love all of the experience they bring to the table, but that may not translate in the recruiting game.
I talked to a 17 year old kid today and he is much like many high school students who think 30 is old. Relationships matter and the old guard at JMU are not father figures, but rather grandfather figures.
We'll see how things pan out next February on signing day.
The Dukes landed 6 Hampton Roads players 4 months ago and Mickey is targeting even more with Newsome being a key part of the equation this time around. Hopefully, some of the fringe 2014 Va Tech recruits will follow Newsome to JMU. He has that kind of pull in this area.

I engage 17-18 year olds darn near every day of the year about their future career paths in college, and have done so for over 30 years. Based on that personal history I can confirm that you're absolutely correct that many of those kids think 30 is old. Heck, most of them think 20 is some kind of milestone.

That said, out of the thousands upon thousands of 17-18 year olds I've met, those that we'd be interested in attracting to JMU are actually impressed by the gray hair and experience represented by the old geezers. Maybe it's a Harry Potter kind of thing, and they see us as Dumbledore-type characters? 03-old

Let's hope Newsome still has his magic potions working to bring in top recruits!

RE: JMU football camp
There used to be an old mantra- don't trust anyone over 30. That was about uhhh, 40+ years ago, so this isn't anything new.

MM and staff aren't quite Bobby Bowden and JoPa old, are we going to start firing Coaches once they hit 50? 55? That's a lot of good experience that would be going to waste.

Didn't many credit Deane with bringing a calming influence or some intangible to the Bball squad this year?

RE: JMU football camp
I follow Ulrick Edmonds on twitter and he's been all over the place on the recruiting scene this offseason including some areas that we don't typically get a lot of players from. I know he's been up in Pennsylvania multiple times and remarked that JMU was very popular up there (not surprising) and some offers would be going out to some PA kids. Also, he was North Carolina just a few days ago recruiting. That's a state that Mickey has said in the past is not worth recruiting due to all of the competition so that's a bit of a change of course on that. Are we expanding the recruiting footprint to prepare for 85 scholarships? I have no idea but it's an interesting thought. Or, does the fact that ODU now has 85 ships and Liberty may soon as well force our hand to expand out of VA more and more? Honestly don't know the answer to either question but I think it would be good if someone like Stoss could pose the question to Mickey about the perceived geographic expansion when it comes to recruiting. Of course, as much of a **** as Mickey is to Stoss every time he asks a question, he'd probably just give him some smartass remark.

That an excellent point about needing to expand our recruiting footprint. I can see it now. The answer would be "well we'd have to expand our footprint under either of those circumstances". It would give us here on the boards all kinds of material!

That being said, I'm glad to hear that we are expanding our recruiting a bit. Regardless of the situation, it's gotta be viewed as a positive!

RE: JMU football camp
I'm not sure if the Virginia Beach camp took place tonight. The weather was pretty severe with nasty thunderstorms all day and tornado warnings to boot.
Today was the first time I've ever received a tornado warning on my phone and I haven't signed up for any weather alerts. Does anyone know how that works? Area code of your phone number? Based on what happened in Oklahoma, it made me move pretty quick to the ground floor.

definitely not area code (i still have a 609 area code; had the same number since i was 17). it is location based i would have to believe as i have received them before. do you have an iphone? if so under settings, go to notifications. all the way at the bottom there is a section of "government alerts" i have them turned on for Amber Alerts and Emergency Alerts.

Like FOATI said, it's based on ego location data that is being collected from your phone and push notifications that are being sent based on certain settings that you can control.

RE: JMU football camp
JMU has put out some offers after the recent camps in Hampton Roads.
The most recent is Kapri Doucet from Bruton whose best previous offer was from Marshall. Many of you know that Bruton's coach is former JMU linebacker Tracy Harrod.

Jahlil Green from Lafayette was offered last week along with Devonte Dedmon from Warhill. Dedmon is being honored as the athlete of the year by the Peninsula Sports Club.

We shall see if Newsome can turn his clout into results during his first year back in the Burg.
