Question about Aquino
I see his last name and think to myself that it is pronou a-kee-no. I here the announcers pronounce it a-kwee-no. Which is it?

The Rice staff follows the pronunciation a-kwee-no, presumably honoring Michael's own preference. Other announcers are supposed to honor the guide that the player's own team provides. So the ESPN guys should be saying a-kwee-no as well.

Individual preferences are definitely not predictable: in recent years we had a "ren-DOAN" and a "MAN-you-ull" when one might have expected "REN-dun" and/or "man-WELL". And then there are the Czech/German names that frequently populate baseball rosters in Texas -- in some cases, the same name will be pronounced differently by different branches of the same family. All you can do is ask the player what he prefers, and go with that.

RE: Question about Aquino
I suppose Aquino could either be Italian, Spanish or Filipino and all three would pronounce it differently. I'm not sure about his heritage, but yeah it's probably best to just use what Michael wants, I guess.

The bolded clause was all you needed; the rest was surplusage.

I ran into him at the Potbelly Sandwich shop on Kirby in January and he confirmed George's comment.

The explanation I heard was it's Italian.
