RE: 2013 NIU HOF
Interesting irony having Denise Dove inducted during the Akron game. Her husband was fired as the Head Football Coach by Akron after the 2011 season.

Good call on Walt Owens as well. Hadn't thought about him.

Owens was the best. Coaching Baseball was a blast of a class. It was like having Bill Cosby as a teacher. You just went to hear him tell stories for 50 minutes and always left feeling better then when you sat down. He is a true asset not just to the atheletic department but to the university.

Being inducted into the HOF in the same class as Joe Novak would be awesome.

Back in the day when coaches taught a class. Coaching Basketball with Emory Luck was the same way. Walked into class next to his office with nothing and just talked for 50 minutes. The jocks would put their heads down half way into class. Everybody earned an A or B. I had no clue how he graded without tests or homework.

Coaching Basketball wasn't as much fun as Baseball. The coach did make it so you might be able to have a working knowledge of what was required of a high school basketball coach. Made us type up a playbook and diagram offenses. It was a pretty interesting class. Just way more work than the baseball class.

RE: 2013 NIU HOF
I took Basketball Coaching with coach Owens and enjoyed the one hour of story telling. My roommate took the same class but had John McDougal as his instructor. Unlike my experience, my roommate said the class taught by McDougal was one of the most difficult classes he took at NIU, and he was a biochemistry major.

Took that class too. Best talker on campus. Plus the man got Buck O'Neil to do a speech on campus- that was a big highlight in my undergrad. And one day some future child of mine will have a killer little league team.

Almost took bowling with Owens, but couldn't make it fit with other things.

Do you think there's a correlation between that and his coaching record?

Yes. He had some great players but had a very mediocre W/L record.
