Agree with every good thing that's been said on here about David W.

Really good guy.

Back to thread topic -

I've got to be honest. I don't really get the need to heckle or abuse either a player or coach on the other team, or to get on any of our own players (and sadly I've heard the latter, although thankfully not often). I always thought you went to the game to pull for your team, or absent a rooting interest (e.g., most Astros games when St. Louis is not in town), just to watch the game itself and appreciate the better plays.

I can think of a few I've admittedly laughed at. But they were clever, not caustic or mean. And I really don't like profanity, X-rated stuff or anything personal in nature. As others have posted, there are lots of kids at these games, and it's really not the example to set.

I also can recall yelling and saying a few really idiotic things my freshman year. Stuff in hindsight I wish I could take back.

I wish I could take back my entire freshman year.

However, even vaguely racist and/or homophobic slurs are crossing the line in any case. But if this is what happened in Eugene, I am not surprised in the least. Oregon is the armpit of the West Coast and is the very epitome of slack-tivism and pseudo-diversity.

UO is also a terrible school, so I would expect no less from their "students."

I fail to see the significant difference between regional stereotypes and race stereotypes. As far as I'm aware those have a lot of common ground.

Typical Austinite.

You are correct. As I wrote it I kept saying to myself "didn't I have a conversation about this around a month ago?". And I did with Joe Welsh who told me about Dave being with the Dynamo.

Thanks for the quick correction.

Heckling is part of the game and can be rather entertaining*, but there are also rules for fan behavior that NCAA officials are there to enforce. It's very easy to put a stop to it. You get up, walk down to the nearest official, explain the situation, then have the offender treated to listening to the rest of the game on the radio in the parking lot. Done.

On more than one occasion, I have warned a visiting fan at Reckling that "we don't act like that here. You want to behave that way in your own ballpark? Fine. Not here. Either clean it up, or you will be removed. Your choice." They usually sit quietly with their hands in their lap the rest of the game, once they've seen me discuss the problem with an official or cop who then makes his presence known by standing near by for the duration.

*Best heckling fan base I've experienced is TSU. They have fun with it and will engage in a good back and forth.

Dave is the ticket manager for the Dynamo (he started about April 1 or so). A really good guy.

It's nice to hear that you do such things as calling out inappropriate behavior at the games and/or reporting it to officials. It's true - there are a lot of children at athletic events and it's important that good sportsmanship is learned at an early age.

Another school with heckling fans is Texas Tech - I seem to recall they had a group of individuals (The Tech Hecklers?) who were a force at baseball games several years ago. I don't know if they still exist.

"Heckling" seems to have a negative connotation. I don't have a problem with "spirited commentary on the opponent and/or game." 03-wink

If fans are so into the game that they are using their voices to try to sway the outcome, that is not necessarily a bad thing. Slurs and personal insults are not appropriate, of course. Heckling in a manner that makes you a constant annoyance to surrounding fans and disrupts their enjoyment of the game is not appropriate. I like best the hecklers who manage to amuse fans on both sides with the things they yell. One of my friends who falls into that category liked to incorporate the ads on the outfield wall into his cheers.

My father went to that game and thought "Sparky" was hilarious ("It looks so realistic!", he said). He also got quite a kick out of the giant "eaTme" banner hung off the side of Sid Rich.

It wasn't heckling, but that makes me think of a particularly prominent TCU fan at the 2007 Rice Regional. Her non-stop, high-pitched chant of "T-C-U! T-C-U! T-C-U!" drove me crazy. She went to all of TCU's games that weekend and never stopped chanting.

Wasn't she related to a TCU player ? I seem to recall being told she was ?

Thank you. That was the point that I obviously failed to communicate re these characters. That sums it up very nicely.

Since you bring up 2002 Super Regionals against LSU...

Rice won both games of a double header shutting out LSU in both games. WELL DONE!

How many hits and walks did you give up?

How many hits and walks in the other game? Who pitched?

How do you compare that day to Jordan's gem Saturday?

Box scores:

Herce-Friday Game 1

Crowder-Saturday Game 2

No LSU batter even touched second base on Friday. Good memories.

The best series ever at the Reck IMHO.*

*So far

From a pure excitement perspective, the regional the prior weekend IMHO was better. I will never forget the wild pitch in the 9 th followed by Arnold's RBI single.
Is there anywhere the wild pitch can be seen on video?

If you mean the Baylor game, that was 2001. It ranks with the game that eliminated UT in Omaha in 2003 as most exciting to me. Baylor imploded in the 9th - before Zane Carlson threw his IBB wild pitch, there was the error on a routine 5-4 force play where the ball went to RF because no one covered 2nd, hence runners on 2nd and 3rd, which then caused Smith to order the IBB.
