The problem with 14 team conferences can be solved very easily, if there are compromises.
  • 9 game conference schedule.
  • Florida State and Miami play every year cross-division.
  • North Carolina and Virginia play ever year cross-division.
  • Other schools aren't locked into any specific cross-division match-up, to increase exposure in the opposite territory, and increase match-up variety.
  • Every school will have played the entirety of the opposite division within three year's time.
  • Every school will have played Notre Dame within three year's time.
  • Divisions are competitively balanced.

This makes a lot of sense on a lot of levels.

The only problem I have is I don't see the wisdom in making the leagues the old Big East vs. the old ACC. When the Big 12 initially fell apart, a lot of the experts noted that the Big 12 never got over its inherent Big 8 and SWC divisions. They say that ultimately doomed that league (which has since been revived to some extent). This suggestion seems like a similar course of action to that which doomed the B12.

I think I'd be in favor of this alignment if it were suggested in 2020 or so but not now.

I think to get Virginia tech and Virginia(mainly Virginia ) to go along with north(Miami inc) south split they will want a guaranteed crossover game so you can give everybody one in 9 game setup: Virginia Tech-Wake Forest as its there closest team and a north Carolina school, Virginia -North Carolina as they have a long rivalry,Miami-Florida State nuff said, Boston College-Clemson since they play a trophy game yearly and have some history, Syracuse- NC State/ Duke, Louisville-NC State/Duke, Pittsburgh-Georgia Tech .Virginia and Virginia Tech could have a guaranteed 2nd game with a Carolina school among rotating crossovers with the other rotating game between fsu/GT or Clemson

No need for a 2nd guaranteed crossover make sure at least one of the two crossover's includes 1 of the 3 NC schools every year

For example UVA plays UNC every year and then NC State, FSU for 2 years, which then rotates to Duke, Clemson for 2 years, which then rotates to Ga Tech, Wake for 2 years.

The years UVA plays UNC at home they play the other NC school on the road thus guaranteeing them a game in NC every year. Same can apply to VA Tech with a crossover with Wake Forest or NC State.
