Gee to "retire"
handful of days after an awkward and asinine attempt at standup comedy led to an avalanche of criticism from both his targets and the public at large, E. Gordon Gee‘s time at Ohio State is quickly coming to a close.

In an emailed statement to the Columbus Dispatch, Gee confirmed that he will be stepping down as OSU’s president on July 1. While the move is officially being called a retirement, it comes five days after a letter from the Board of Trustees, signed March 11, surfaced and which stated that one more misstep on the part of the bow-tied one would likely cost him his job.

It also comes after Gee spent the past five days apologizing to, well, pretty much everyone.

Gee will officially inform faculty, students and staff of his decision this afternoon — via email.

“Without question, the university has achieved remarkable success, and it has been my honor and calling to lead it,” Gee’s email to the Dispatch read. “Ohio State is well-positioned for the future. I love this university, and my relationship with it will continue.”

The self-described Orville Redenbacher look-a-like will complete his second stint as OSU’s president, with this term lasting six years. He also headed the state’s flagship university from 1990-99. And before you ask, no, I have no idea if moving on to become Rutgers’ next athletic director would be the most logical step in his employment arc.

Most overblown story ever. Dude was ripping his opponents, true, but he was playing to his audience and trying to be funny. Not a huge deal, to me at least, and I can't stand the guy.

The Oakland Raiders fired their publicist this week. Mark Davis and Elwood G. Gee sound like a perfect couple.

I think its more that this is not the first time his mouth has gotten him in trouble recently. Remember him joking about being worried that Jim Tressel would fire him? Or his "Little Sisters of the Poor" comments?

The last few years, he's only ever been in the news for making dumb comments.

I actually wonder if he's developing some dementia. Being unable to control what you say is a major warning sign.

Chappy:

He also rambled on about the Big Ten's expansion strategies and said that a Big Ten AD had called his ex-coach a thug.

Then, he implied that Ohio State had to watch the conference commissioner well or he would try to pick their (Buckeyes) pockets.

I am sure that the Ohio State board of trustees and conference commissioner Jim Delany were thrilled with Gee.

All told, he was not very intelligent for such a supposed smart guy and had become a public relations nightmare and a possible source of continued, unfortunate (in Big Ten eyes) disclosure of Big Ten plans to the public and to other conferences.

It was inevitable that he was gone. Other guys can raise funds too from the Bucknuts faithful.

Every man is replaceable.

As Charles de Gaulle once said:

"The graveyards are full of indispensible men."

Goodbye, Gordon.

I agree this was overblown but with so many previous comments that he had to apologize for, I'm not the least bit surprised they decided enough was enough.

I have absolutely no problem with the BOT being disgusted. They should be. Obviously, the things he is saying are not very 'presidential', and as the chief representative of their university, he should act more, well... mature.

But the radio/TV coverage of this and the way they are acting all outraged is a joke, IMO. Taking quotes from a failed comedy routine he made and printing them as if they were serious remarks paints a misleading picture of what really happened. Did he act like a buffoon? Certainly. But in the wake of what happened at Penn State this is really not that big of a deal.

I don't watch ESPN sports shows or listen to sports radio, so I will have to take your word on the media stuff.

They exist just to make controversies out of things, anyway.
